ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra Receives Best KVK Award from National Research Center for Banana

Trichi, Kerala, August 22, 2023: The ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, located in Suttur, has been honored with the prestigious Best Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) award by the National Research Center for Banana, Trichy, Kerala. The accolade was bestowed upon the Kendra during the commemoration of its 30th Foundation Day on August 21, 2023.

Banana cultivation holds immense significance in Mysuru District, particularly with the cultivation of traditional varieties such as Elakki Baale and Nanjangud Rasabale. Unfortunately, the growth of the banana crop has been hampered by challenges posed by pests and diseases. Since 1994-95, ICAR JSS KVK has been steadfastly assisting farmers in overcoming these challenges, thereby augmenting banana cultivation and yield.

The Kendra embarked on a comprehensive study on integrated nutrient management and pest and disease management during its initial stages. Subsequently, successful technology demonstrations were conducted, focusing on bio and chemical management techniques for addressing issues like Rizome Viveel, Sigatoka disease, and Fusarium diseases. Farmers have greatly benefited from the Kendra’s guidance, particularly in adopting intercropping methods for marigold, cucumber, Mangalore cucumber, and tomato.

Introduction of the high-density banana cropping system has been pivotal in optimizing the utilization of natural resources available in farmers’ fields. Additionally, the Kendra has been instrumental in providing Baale Samruddhi (a light nutrient mix) to farmers at subsidized rates since 2009, resulting in a remarkable 35% increase in yield for those who adopted this approach.

The Best KVK award was conferred to ICAR JSS KVK in recognition of its multifaceted endeavors, encompassing technology testing, method demonstrations, scientific cultivation training, seminars, integrated pest and disease management, and expanding the banana cultivation area. The award was accepted by Smt. Divya H.V., Head (Incharge), ICAR JSS KVK, along with Dr. Vinay G.M. (Horticulture Scientist) and Rajanna J.G. (Soil Scientist), representing JSS KVK.

V. Palanimuttu, Director of NIFTEM-T, graced the occasion as the chief guest. He emphasized the value addition in banana cultivation and distributed the accolades. R. Selvarajan, Director of NRCB, announced the imminent release of two new banana varieties – Kaveri Kanchan and Kaveri Vaman – by year’s end. Dr. V. Vekatasubramanian, Director of ATARI, Zone-1, underscored the significance of value addition in banana fruits and their export potential.
