Students should focus on overall development: Maleyuru Guruswamy

Mysuru, January 4, 2020: Maleyuru Guruswamy, a senior litterateur, emphasized the importance of overall development for students in today’s society. He shared his thoughts during the valedictory ceremony of the Cultural and Sports Meet 2019-2020, held at JSS PU College, B.N. Road, Mysuru.

Addressing the students, Maleyuru Guruswamy expressed concern that modern youth tend to prioritize physical appearance over personal qualities and behavior. He stressed the need for holistic development, emphasizing that a well-rounded personality requires nurturing the mind and heart, not just the body. He further highlighted the significance of cultural, emotional, and sports aspects in shaping an individual’s character, asserting that strong relationships in society are built upon these foundations.

Turning his attention to the technological advancements of the present era, Maleyuru Guruswamy noted that while today’s youth have easy access to vast amounts of information, there appears to be a lack of knowledge about great leaders and the rich history of the country. He encouraged students to have clear goals and exhibit a commitment to achieving them, reminding them of the abundant opportunities available in the educational sector.

Prof. B.V. Sambashivaiah, Chief Executive of the JSS College complex, emphasized the need for educational institutions to become centers for the holistic development of students, nurturing their hidden talents and helping them excel in life. He mentioned the vast job market expected to be created globally by 2025 and urged students to develop the necessary skills to seize these opportunities.

Sri S. Gopalakrishna, National-level sports person and Deputy Chief Ticket Inspector of the Railways Department, Mysuru, shared insights on achievement, highlighting the importance of keen interest and hard work.

During the event, Kum. Aleen Mendez and Kum. M. Smitha, PU Commerce students, presented the annual cultural and sports reports. Prizes were distributed to the winners of various competitions, and special performances, including a speed drawing demonstration by S. Chethan, a first PU Arts student, and a magic show by magician S.S. Guruswamy, captivated the audience.

Consumers Warned of Being Enslaved by Advertisements, Urged to Prioritize Quality: Sri D. Venkatachala

Kollegal, December 27, 2019: Sri D. Venkatachala, Senior Advocate from Kollegal, expressed concerns over consumers becoming slaves to advertisements and urged them to prioritize quality over catchy slogans. Speaking at a special lecture on “Consumer Protection Laws” organized by the Senior Students Forum, under the Commerce Club, as part of the World Consumers Day celebration at JSS Women’s College, Kollegal, Sri D. Venkatachala emphasized the importance of consumer rights and the need for vigilant selection.

“As consumers, we have unwittingly succumbed to the influence of advertisements and colorful slogans, forgetting the significance of quality and losing our right to choose,” Sri D. Venkatachala stated. “We are all consumers in our daily lives, and we deserve quality in the products and services we receive based on the price we pay. The law provides us with certain rights as consumers, allowing us to seek compensation if we feel deceived or cheated in terms of quality. However, we must take the initiative to check and ensure the quality of the products or services we consume. Negligence and an irresponsible attitude often lead to deception and cheating. To overcome this, we must develop a habit of questioning and demanding transparency.”

In his presidential address, Prof. M. Basavaraju, Head of Kannada Department, highlighted the need for consumer caution, especially when companies offer seemingly attractive discounts. “Consumers are being deceived at every turn in today’s world. Therefore, it is essential to conduct more awareness workshops, training camps, and educational initiatives. We must be aware of the opportunities available to us. To combat cheating, fraud, and substandard goods, consumers need to familiarize themselves with consumer protection laws and develop a habit of filing complaints with consumer forums to claim compensation,” he emphasized.

The lecture witnessed the presence of Smt. Mamatha, Head of Business Management, along with enthusiastic teachers and students.

Morality: The Bedrock of Individuals and Nations – Sri Suresh

Kollegal, December 26, 2019: Sri Suresh, Assistant Professor in the Geography Department of Government First Grade College, T. Narasipura, emphasized the significance of morality as the firm foundation for both individuals and their respective countries. Delivering a lecture on the topic “Declining moral values as the reason for social evils,” organized by the Youth Red Cross Unit at JSS Women’s College in Kollegal, Sri Suresh stressed the need to cultivate moral values to build a secure and prosperous society.

“In the present world, we are witnessing a decline in moral values among people, which is the major reason behind the social evils plaguing our global community,” Sri Suresh expressed. “Incidents such as embezzlement of funds by educated individuals, corruption within prestigious companies, cases of rape and other forms of sexual harassment, violence against children and women, and the premature collapse of buildings before inauguration are all direct consequences of eroding moral values. Therefore, it is imperative to prioritize the inculcation of moral values for the sake of fostering a sustainable and secure society.”

Prof. Umesh, Principal of JSS Women’s College, Kollegal, highlighted the significance of morality in his address, citing the words of Swami Vivekananda. “According to Swami Vivekananda, the behavior, discipline, and positive thoughts of citizens hold greater importance for a country than its constitution. As educated individuals, it is our responsibility to uphold moral values and serve as role models for others. If we and the future generations aspire to lead healthy and happy lives in a secure environment, we must wholeheartedly embrace moral values,” he emphasized.

The event witnessed the presence of Sri Basavadatta Mahadevaprasad, Red Cross Unit Convener, and Smt. Smitha A. S., Head of the Geography Department.
