Horse Gram PHG-9 Field Day: ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra Empowers Farmers

Suttur, Dec. 19, 2020: The ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra organized a Horse Gram PHG-9 variety field day on December 17, 2020, at Arakere Village in K.R. Nagara Taluk. This event aimed to provide training and showcase the benefits of the PHG-9 horse gram variety to farmers in the region.

Ten farmers from Arakere Village underwent extensive training on seed treatment, farming techniques, and seed production specific to the PHG-9 horse gram variety during the 2020 monsoon season. Furthermore, the Kendra distributed seeds to these farmers, who subsequently planted them in their respective farms. The field day was organized to observe the progress of their crops and assess the benefits of the PHG-9 variety.

The participating farmers were highly satisfied with the performance of the PHG-9 horse gram variety, noting its superiority over the local variety and its ability to yield more produce.

H.V. Divya, Seed Technology Scientist at JSS KVK, provided valuable insights during the field day. She highlighted that the Horse Gram PHG-9 variety exhibits excellent traits, including a shorter growth cycle of 100-105 days and resistance to yellow poison disease. “Under proper care, this variety can yield 3-4 quintals per acre, providing farmers an additional profit of Rs. 2000 per quintal,” she emphasized.

The Horse Gram PHG-9 field day took place in the agricultural field of Sri Kumar, located in Arakere village, K.R. Nagara Taluk. The event served as a platform for farmers to witness firsthand the benefits of adopting the PHG-9 horse gram variety and encouraged them to explore its potential for enhanced productivity and profitability.

Paddy Field Day: JSS KVK Promotes Direct Sowing and Integrated Crop Management

Suttur, Dec. 15, 2020: The ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Rice Research, Hyderabad, and the Agriculture Department, ATMA, T. Narasipura, organized a ‘Paddy Direct Sowing from Drum Seeder and Integrated Crop Management’ field day. The event took place at Danaykanapura Village in T. Narasipura Taluk, aimed at promoting advanced farming techniques among local farmers.

Distinguished guests present at the program included Sri Satish S., In-charge Head of JSS KVK, Sri Shamraj, Agricultural Scientist, Dr. Somashekar, Deputy Director of the Agriculture Department, Smt. Kumuda, Director of ATMA Sub Project, Smt. Kavya, Agricultural Officer, and Sri Shivanna, ATM Project of the Agriculture Department.

During the event, Sri Satish S., In-charge Head of JSS KVK, shared valuable insights into seed treatment methods for paddy, emphasizing the benefits of integrated disease and pest management. He provided comprehensive guidance on cultivation techniques, including mechanical, biological, and chemical procedures, highlighting how proper airflow, light exposure, and the use of drum seeder for direct sowing can significantly reduce disease and pest issues. Sri Satish S. also shed light on cost-saving measures related to spraying expenses.

Agricultural Scientist Sri Shamraj elaborated on field preparation, direct sowing using a drum seeder, sowing methods, water management, nutrition management, and overall crop management. He emphasized that the direct sowing method can reduce production costs by 40% while increasing income by 60% due to higher yields.

Dr. Somashekar, Deputy Director of the Agriculture Department, provided farmers with detailed information about the various facilities available through the department. He encouraged farmers to adopt the drum seeder direct sowing procedure, emphasizing the cost-saving potential and increased income it offers.

Sri Shivanna, representing the ATMA program of the Agriculture Department, extended a warm welcome to all attendees, while Smt. Kavya delivered a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants. The program witnessed the active participation of Agriculture Department officers and 65 farmers.

The Paddy Field Day served as a platform for farmers to gain knowledge and understanding of advanced farming techniques, particularly the benefits of direct sowing through a drum seeder and integrated crop management. JSS KVK remains committed to empowering farmers with innovative agricultural practices for enhanced productivity and profitability.

Ragi Field Day: ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra Empowers Farmers with Ragi Varieties

Suttur, Dec. 10, 2020: The ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra organized a ‘Ragi Field Day’ at Arakere Village in K.R. Nagara Taluk on December 10, 2020. The event aimed to provide training to approximately 20 farmers in seed production, value addition, and the cultivation of two ragi varieties: short-term KMR 630 and white ragi KMR 340.

During the monsoon season of this year, the Kendra distributed seeds and provided training to farmers in Arakere Village. The ‘Ragi Field Day’ was organized to celebrate the successful harvest achieved by these farmers.

Smt. Netravathi Yettinamani, In-house scientist at JSS KVK, enlightened the farmers about the various uses and benefits of the white ragi variety, KMR 340. She highlighted its suitability for bakery products and papad-making due to its white color. Additionally, she emphasized that this variety contains higher protein content. Farmers can expect a yield of 12-14 quintals per acre, and there is potential for increased profitability if they further enhance the cultivation of this variety.

H.V. Divya, Scientist (Seed Technology) at JSS KVK, provided insights into the KMR 640 variety of ragi. She explained that this short-term variety matures within 95-100 days, making it suitable for sowing in August after tobacco harvesting. KMR 640 is resistant to diseases and yields 12-14 quintals in rain-fed areas and 18-20 quintals in irrigated lands. Divya further emphasized that farmers can earn an additional profit of up to Rs. 1,000 per quintal after the cleaning process.

The ‘Ragi Field Day’ served as a platform for farmers to learn about the cultivation techniques and benefits of the KMR 340 and KMR 640 ragi varieties. JSS KVK remains dedicated to supporting farmers in adopting innovative agricultural practices that enhance their productivity and profitability.

Services of JSS Institutions in the Educational Sector are Immense: Prof. G. Hemanth Kumar, UoM VC

Mysuru, Dec. 10, 2020: Prof. G. Hemanth Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore, highlighted the significance of skill training and praised the services rendered by JSS Institutions in the state. He made these remarks during the inauguration of the ‘Abhivinyasa’ program at JSS College of Arts, Commerce, and Science, Ooty Road, Mysuru. The event was organized to benefit students who have recently enrolled in degree courses.

Prof. G. Hemanth Kumar emphasized the importance of skill education in a time where job opportunities are abundant but skilled labor is scarce. He acknowledged that the government alone cannot provide education and jobs to everyone, and thus the services offered by institutions like Suttur Math and other Maths in the state are invaluable. The educational institutions established by Suttur Srimath have significantly benefited rural students, and JSS College, in particular, provides various skill-based courses. Prof. G. Hemanth Kumar encouraged students to make the most of these opportunities, emphasizing the need for skill education and the importance of setting goals and working hard to achieve them.

Dr. C.G. Betsurmath, Executive Secretary of JSS MVP, delivered the presidential address, praising the vision of Jagadguru Sri Rajendra Mahaswamiji and the remarkable services provided by Srimath in the fields of arts, literature, spirituality, social work, healthcare, and more. He acknowledged the current pontiff’s efforts in further strengthening the institution. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, JSS Institutions have continued to function effectively and organized. Dr. C.G. Betsurmath urged students to adapt to future changes and overcome challenges through higher education, emphasizing the need to utilize their strengths optimally.

In his introductory speech, Prof. B.V. Sambashivaiah, Chief Executive of the College Complex, encouraged students to make full use of the college facilities and strive to excel academically, becoming responsible citizens of the country. He highlighted the college’s achievements and its reputation for providing a wide range of courses that meet current demands. The college ensures that all necessary facilities are provided to students as expected by their parents.

The ‘Abhivinyasa’ program, an online event, will span three days from December 10 to 12, 2020. It aims to introduce students to the college, provide information about education, highlight available facilities, discuss the curriculum, and showcase extracurricular centers.

Women in Agriculture Day Celebration: Recognizing the Contributions of Women Farmers

Suttur, Dec. 6, 2020: The ICAR JSS Krishi Vignana Kendra, in collaboration with the Agriculture Department, Periyapatna, Kaanana Krishika Mahileyara Sangha, and Naari Gruhotpannagalu, organized a program at the Periyapatna Rotary premises to celebrate ‘Women in Agriculture Day’ on December 4, 2020.

In her introductory speech, Smt. H.V. Divya, Scientist at ICAR JSS Krishi Vignan Kendra, Suttur, highlighted the significant role played by women in agriculture. She emphasized that women are not limited to household responsibilities but actively participate in various agricultural activities such as sowing and reaping, becoming the backbone of the agriculture sector. Smt. Divya shared that the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, has designated December 4 as ‘Women in Agriculture Day’ to recognize and honor the contributions of women in the agricultural field.

The program was inaugurated by Sri A.P. Shivakumar, Assistant Agricultural Director, Periyapatna. In his address, he expressed pride in identifying and respecting women farmers who contribute to agricultural activities and its development. He advocated for similar programs to be organized at a larger scale to provide greater recognition and publicity to women farmers.

Smt. Seema Prasad from Sahaja Samruddhi Samsthe, during her guest lecture, referred to women farmers as ‘Beeja Maates’ (mothers of seeds) to show her respect for their efforts. She emphasized the crucial role of women in protecting indigenous variety seeds, which contributes to their survival. Smt. Prasad encouraged the women farmers to protect and develop these seeds, assuring them that her organization would provide support and purchase the seeds from them, leading to increased profits.

Another guest speaker, Smt. B.R. Sudha, an agriculture graduate from Hunsur, shared her daily practices for maintaining good health. She advised women farmers to avoid consuming junk food and instead opt for homemade food and snacks. Smt. Sudha also encouraged them to develop kitchen gardens and grow their own vegetables for consumption.

Smt. Neelamma and Smt. Poovi from Abbalatti Haadi introduced more than 25 varieties of locally available plants and explained their medicinal qualities. A competition was organized for the women participating in the program to identify these medicinal plants. Many men and women actively took part in the competition, with S. G. Jaji securing the first place, followed by Basappa Lingapura in second place and Akkamma in third place.

Smt. D.C. Shruti, Executive Officer, Taluk Panchayat, Periyapatna, presided over the program. She emphasized the importance of women farmers cultivating chemical-free vegetables for their own use. Smt. Shruti informed the participants about the availability of grants amounting to Rs. 1,500 for developing kitchen gardens under the MGNREGA program, encouraging them to utilize the opportunity effectively.

On this occasion, Smt. Manjula Kalappa from Hittane Hebbagilu, who discontinued tobacco cultivation and has been using and conserving indigenous seeds for the past nine years, was felicitated. Previously burdened by a loan of Rs. 10 lakh due to tobacco cultivation, Manjula and her husband Kalappa switched to using indigenous seeds, leading to improved soil health and personal well-being. They now cultivate various vegetables on their two-acre land near the forest border, including brinjal, chili, beans, tomato, greens, carrot, ragi, and paddy. Their efforts have resulted in an annual profit of Rs. 5 lakh. Kalappa expressed his pride, acknowledging his wife and two daughters for their significant contributions in conserving indigenous seeds.

Smt. Netravathi Yettinamani, Scientist at KVK, explained various agriculture-related apps like Kisan Rath, Farms, and E-Nam. The vote of thanks was given by Smt. Netravathi Yettinamani, and the program was compered by Smt. K.P. Ashakumari, Convener of Naari Household Products. The event commenced with an invocation by Kum. Akanksha Jain.
