Suttur, Dec. 10, 2020: The ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra organized a ‘Ragi Field Day’ at Arakere Village in K.R. Nagara Taluk on December 10, 2020. The event aimed to provide training to approximately 20 farmers in seed production, value addition, and the cultivation of two ragi varieties: short-term KMR 630 and white ragi KMR 340.
During the monsoon season of this year, the Kendra distributed seeds and provided training to farmers in Arakere Village. The ‘Ragi Field Day’ was organized to celebrate the successful harvest achieved by these farmers.
Smt. Netravathi Yettinamani, In-house scientist at JSS KVK, enlightened the farmers about the various uses and benefits of the white ragi variety, KMR 340. She highlighted its suitability for bakery products and papad-making due to its white color. Additionally, she emphasized that this variety contains higher protein content. Farmers can expect a yield of 12-14 quintals per acre, and there is potential for increased profitability if they further enhance the cultivation of this variety.
H.V. Divya, Scientist (Seed Technology) at JSS KVK, provided insights into the KMR 640 variety of ragi. She explained that this short-term variety matures within 95-100 days, making it suitable for sowing in August after tobacco harvesting. KMR 640 is resistant to diseases and yields 12-14 quintals in rain-fed areas and 18-20 quintals in irrigated lands. Divya further emphasized that farmers can earn an additional profit of up to Rs. 1,000 per quintal after the cleaning process.
The ‘Ragi Field Day’ served as a platform for farmers to learn about the cultivation techniques and benefits of the KMR 340 and KMR 640 ragi varieties. JSS KVK remains dedicated to supporting farmers in adopting innovative agricultural practices that enhance their productivity and profitability.
