Sri Veerabhadraiahswamy Jayanthi Utsav

Mysuru, September 19, 2023: Sri Veerabhadraswamy Jayanthi Utsav was observed at the Suttur Srikshetra on September 19, 2023, Tuesday. The Sri Veerabhadraswamy Jayanthi Utsav is held on the first Tuesday of Bhadrapada Maasa, as Suttur Srikshetra is known as the birth place of Sri Veerabhadraswamy and hence possess religious background.

Special poojas were held at the Sri Veerabhadraswamy Temple on the hillock in Suttur and inside the Srimath premises, on the occasion of the Jayanthi Utsav. Rudrabhisheka, special pooja were held along with procession of the Utsav idol. Hundreds of devotees took part in the programs.

International Democracy Day Commemorated at JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Mysore

Mysuru, September 15, 2023: JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science, located on Ooty Road, Mysuru, observed the International Democracy Day on September 15, 2023. The event, held at the college premises, was graced by the esteemed presence of Prof. B.V. Sambasivaiah, Chief Executive of the College Complex, who presided over the program. Dr. S. Pratibha, the Principal of the college, solemnly read the proposed constitution and administered the oath.

MOU Signed between JSS College of Arts, Commerce & Science and CSIR-CFTRI

Mysuru, September 15, 2023: JSS College of Arts, Commerce & Science, Ooty Road, Mysuru, and CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to foster cooperation in academic and research.

JSS College has been conducting two year-Masters of Vocation and three-year-Bachelor of Vocation in Food Processing and Engineering, approved by UGC under the ‘Deen Dayal Upadya Koushal Kendra’. This MOU facilitates to get exposed to state of the art technology and equipment available at the laboratories of CSIR-CFTRI and get practical training as a part of skill development.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Prof. R. Mugeshappa, Director JSS Mahavidyapheetha, and Prof. B. V. Sambashivaiah, Chief Executive JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science and signed between Dr. Sridevi Annapurna Singh, Director CSIR-CFTRI, and Dr. S. Promoting Sustainable Coconut Cultivation on World Coconut Day

Suttur, September 9, 2023: On the occasion of World Coconut Day, the ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Suttur, in collaboration with the Agricultural Technicians Institute, Mysuru Chapter, and Cadbury, Bengaluru, organized a comprehensive training program addressing ‘Integrated Disease and Pest Management in Coconut Crop.’

During the event, Dr. Yogeesh G.H., Chief Guest, emphasized the invaluable role of coconut trees, often referred to as ‘Kalpavruksha.’ He highlighted the diverse uses of coconut and expressed concern about the declining number of farmers engaged in coconut cultivation. Dr. Yogeesh stressed the need to encourage coconut cultivation and provided insights into water conservation practices in coconut farms. He also discussed integrated management techniques using agricultural waste from coconut farms and recommended intercropping with crops like cocoa or banana to enhance soil fertility and farmers’ income.

Sri Mohan, Cadbury, Bengaluru, Assistant Manager, introduced cocoa cultivation as a viable option alongside coconut farming, citing its compatibility. Cadbury pledged to provide high-quality cocoa saplings, guidance on cocoa cultivation, and a reliable buy-back mechanism, ensuring farmers a good return on their investment.

Sri Shivamurthy, a member of the Agricultural Technicians Institute, Mysuru Chapter, advocated for multi-cropping and integrated agricultural practices as a more profitable approach compared to monoculture coconut farming.

A progressive farmer, Basavanna, shared his experiences with advanced water technology and modern farming methods, emphasizing the importance of adopting scientific techniques in agriculture.

Smt. Divya H.V., Senior Scientist and Head (In-charge) of JSS KVK, underscored the significance of coconut farming in Mysuru District. She encouraged farmers to reduce chemical usage and increase income through value addition, such as producing coconut oil, powder, and other products. Smt. Divya also promoted sustainable practices like converting coconut tree fronds into organic manure, improving soil fertility, and increasing yields.

Dr. Vinay G.M., Horticultural Scientist at ICAR JSS KVK, presented information on coconut crop varieties, plant production, integrated nutrient management, and water management.

Dr. Prasad Y.P., Plant Conservation Scientist, shared insights into managing various diseases and pests affecting coconut crops, including rhinoceros beetle, red-nosed beetle, whitefly, sap blight, mushroom disease, and black rot disease.

Sri Niranjan, Technical Executive from Cadbury Company, provided guidance on cocoa cultivation alongside coconut crops, detailing comprehensive cultivation methods.

The event drew participation from JSS KVK scientists, staff members, Agricultural Technicians Institute members, Cadbury Company staff, Raitha Sangha members, Outreach Institute members, and more than 150 farmers, both male and female, who benefited from the wealth of information shared during the program.

This collaborative effort aims to promote sustainable coconut cultivation practices, ensuring the prosperity of coconut farmers and safeguarding this vital crop for future generations.

Suttur, September 1, 2023: The ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Suttur, known for its dedication to agricultural innovation and rural development, has received the prestigious ‘Best KVK Award’ from the National Research Center for Banana in Trichy, Tamil Nadu. This recognition was bestowed upon the center on August 21, 2023, as part of the 30th Foundation Day celebrations of the National Research Center for Banana.

Banana Cultivation in Mysuru District Banana plays a vital role in the horticultural landscape of Mysuru district, where heritage varieties such as ‘Yelakka Baalehannu’ and ‘Nanjangudu Rasabale’ hold cultural significance. However, the cultivation of ‘Nanjangudu Rasabale’ has faced challenges due to the Panama or Pusarium Wilt disease. To address this issue and enhance yields, local farmers have successfully adopted varieties like G-9 and cardamom cultivars.

ICAR JSS KVK’s Contribution ICAR JSS KVK has been actively engaged in Mysuru District since 1994-95, focusing on increasing banana production and productivity. The center’s efforts primarily revolve around providing farmers with innovative technologies in integrated nutrient management and pest and disease management. Notable achievements include successful technology reviews and practice demonstrations for controlling stem borer, tuber borer, leaf spot disease, and downy mildew diseases.

High-Density Banana Cropping and Nutrient Management The center has introduced high-density banana cropping systems that optimize natural resources available in farmers’ fields. Additionally, ICAR JSS KVK has procured ‘Banana Samriddhi,’ a low-nutrient mixture technology from the Indian Horticulture Research Institute, Hesaraghatta, Bengaluru, which has been supplied to farmers since 2009. This initiative has benefited approximately 4050 farmers across 2289 hectares, resulting in improved yields.

Promoting Self-Employment and Value Addition ICAR JSS KVK actively promotes self-employment by imparting training in value addition related to banana crop. One of its success stories is Mr. Naveen Kumar, who was honored with the “Best Banana Entrepreneur” award by the National Research Center for Banana in 2022, with the support of KVK.

Recognition and Award In recognition of its significant contributions to banana cultivation and agricultural development, the National Research Center for Banana, Trichy, honored ICAR JSS KVK with the esteemed ‘Best KVK Award.’ The award ceremony took place on August 21, 2023, and was attended by Mrs. Divya H.V., Senior Scientist and Head (In-charge) of JSS KVK, Dr. G.M. Vinay, Scientist (Horticulture), and Shri J.G. Rajanna, Program Assistant (Soil Science), who received the award on behalf of the center.
