Training Program on Organic Terrace Gardening Empowers Farmers

Suttur, June 29, 2021: ICAR JSS Krishi Vignan Kendra, Suttur, in collaboration with ICAR Krishi Vignan Kendra, Gonikoppal, Kodagu, organized a training program on organic terrace gardening as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Indian Independence (India@75). The program aimed to equip participants with knowledge and skills in cultivating organic gardens on their terraces.

Dr. Prabhakar B., a distinguished Horticulture Scientist from ICAR KVK, Gonikoppal, served as a resource person, enlightening participants on various critical aspects of terrace gardening. Dr. Prabhakar shared valuable insights on suitable vegetables and fruits for terrace gardening, emphasizing their adaptability to different seasons such as rainy, winter, and summer. He also highlighted perennial crops, essential tools and implements required for terrace gardening, maintenance practices, and precautionary measures to ensure success.

Smt. Netravathi Yettinamani, a renowned Home Scientist from JSS KVK, Suttur, also contributed as a resource person, focusing on the importance of balanced food groups and the significant role of fruits and vegetables in our diet. She emphasized the adverse effects of excessive pesticide usage and underscored the benefits of terrace gardening or kitchen gardens. Smt. Netravathi provided participants with insights into various models of kitchen gardens, availability of seeds and plants, essential tools for cultivation, and the layout of a terrace garden. Additionally, she discussed the range of greens, vegetables, and fruits suitable for terrace gardening, highlighting their medicinal qualities, nutrients, and their relevance for daily consumption.

Smt. Divya H.V., Senior Scientist and Head (Incharge) of JSS KVK, shared her expertise in organic fertilizer preparation for kitchen gardening. She educated participants on the methods of preparing fertilizers in pots, the optimal soil and manure mixture, effective nutrition management, and the principles of Anaerobic Composting. Smt. Divya addressed the challenges related to crop diseases and pests, providing insights into traditional knowledge-based solutions, including various decoctions for disease and pest prevention. Participants also learned about the application of “beejamrutha” and “jeevamrutha” and their practical usage.

The training program witnessed the enthusiastic participation of 101 farmers from Mysuru and Kodagu Districts, as well as staff members from JSS KVK and Gonikoppal KVK.
