Training Program Promotes Utilization of Sugarcane in Non-Sugar Product Manufacturing

Suttur, June 28, 2021: ICAR JSS Krishi Vignan Kendra, Suttur, conducted a training program on “Using Sugarcane in Production of Non-Sugar Products” as part of the India@75 Program. The program, held in Sonahalli Village, Nanjangud Taluk, aimed to educate participants on the diverse applications of sugarcane beyond traditional sugar production.

Sri Shamraj, a renowned Cultivation Science Scientist from JSS KVK, served as the resource person, providing participants with valuable insights into various sub-products of sugarcane and their versatile uses. He emphasized the utilization of by-products such as press food for compost preparation, bagasse for electricity generation, and sugarcane juice for ethanol production. Sri Shamraj also highlighted the emerging trend of producing environmentally-friendly bioplastics using sugarcane starch, while emphasizing the use of ethanol in sanitizer and biodiesel production.

During the training session, Sri Shamraj introduced participants to innovative production techniques in sugarcane cultivation. He discussed improved sugarcane varieties that offer higher yields and shared best practices for fertilizer usage and comprehensive crop management tailored to specific sugarcane varieties and soil characteristics.

As part of the program, Sri Shamraj visited the sugarcane field of Sri Satish Kumar, a resident of Sonahalli village, where he provided comprehensive crop management guidance and shared practical insights.

The training program received an enthusiastic response from the participants, who appreciated the opportunity to explore the vast potential of sugarcane beyond traditional sugar production.
