World Coconut Day marked at ICAR JSS KVK, Suttur with training, farmer–scientist interaction and drone demo

Suttur, September 4, 2025: Suttur, Mysuru (Karnataka) — On World Coconut Day, ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Suttur—along with the Institute of Agricultural Technologists (IAT), Mysore Unit; ICAR–National Bureau of Agricultural Pest Resources (NBAIR), Bengaluru; and Shobhit Nanjegowda Farm, Kennalu—jointly organized a day-long programme themed “Let’s spread the power of coconut to the world.” The event featured training on improved coconut cultivation practices and a farmer–scientist interaction at ICAR JSS KVK, Suttur.

The programme was inaugurated by Shri N. M. Shivashankarappa, Director of Horticulture, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, with a ceremonial watering of a coconut sapling.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. K. R. Ravindra, Secretary, IAT (Mysore Unit) and retired Assistant Director of Agriculture, delivered a keynote on the significance of World Coconut Day. He urged wider outreach on the importance and potential of coconut and introduced the working style of the Agricultural Technicians’ Association. He welcomed participants and emphasized that adopting coconut in multi-cropping and integrated farming systems is more beneficial than cultivating it as a sole crop.

Dr. Gundappa, Senior Scientist, NBAIR, Bengaluru, highlighted NBAIR’s ongoing work on the biological management of key coconut pests, including spiral whitefly and the blackhead worm—and noted that interested farmers would be trained in the production of predatory and parasitic organisms.

Presiding over the programme, Dr. B. N. Gyanesh, Senior Scientist & Head, ICAR JSS KVK, Suttur, described coconut as a mythological tree whose every part is useful. Observing the rise in coconut cultivation, he cautioned that farmers are often confused while selecting quality seedlings and face non-availability issues. He provided guidance on selecting and raising good seedlings and explained how agricultural waste available in coconut plantations can be used to manage the plantation holistically.

Progressive farmer Basavanna of Ayarahalli shared the water-use technologies and other innovations he has implemented in his coconut garden and urged farmers to adopt scientific practices. Chandrashekhar of Shobhit Nanjegowda Farm encouraged farmers to set up coconut nurseries as a pathway to enterprise.

Dr. Vinay G. M., Horticultural Scientist, JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Suttur, delivered technical sessions covering coconut varieties, plant production, integrated nutrient management, intercropping, and water management.

Dr. Selvarajan Kehiriya, Senior Scientist, NBAIR, Bengaluru, conducted a drone demonstration on spraying Iceria fumarosa for whitefly management in coconut.

In the subsequent farmer–scientist interaction, Dr. Ramegowda and Dr. Prasad Y. P. explained the symptoms and integrated management of major pests and diseases in coconut, including rhinoceros beetle, red snout beetle, nits, whitefly, sap-sucking disorders, fungal diseases, downy mildew, and other related problems.

The event saw active participation from scientists of the Agricultural Science Center, Mrs. Divya H. V., Shamraj, and other staff members—along with members of the Agricultural Technicians’ Association, progressive farmers from Farmers’ Associations, and over 150 farmers, including women farmers, who took part and benefited from the knowledge shared.

Life Should Be a Path of Achievement: Sri H.B. Devanna

Suttur, August 18, 2025: “Life should be led on the path of achievement with hope and positivity,” said Sri H.B. Devanna, delivering a sermon on the 26th day of the Shravan month at Suttur Srikshetra on August 18.

He emphasized that life must be lived with a sense of purpose and desire to achieve. “There should be hope in life; one must strive — that is what life is. Difficulties are natural, but we should never be discouraged by them,” he said.

If there is hope in what one does, success is possible. To achieve it, one must nurture love and devotion, avoiding hatred. This quality is evident in the lives of the supreme devotees and sharanas, who filled their hearts with compassion. “Think deeply about what you can do with your life, and the path will become clearer,” he added.

Sri Devanna noted that life’s challenges are essential — they teach valuable lessons, show us what victory looks like, and prepare us to guide others.
“Success in life is like a mirage in a desert, but it is achievable. Everyone has unique talents and abilities, and if nurtured with the right opportunities, success is certain.”

He also underlined the importance of good parenting and education. “If parents lead by example, their children will naturally follow the path of ideals. Parents must ensure their children are in good company and are provided quality education. Education should be the light that leads them to a life of achievement.”

To illustrate his message, he recounted the story of Pagaltoneyanda, a devout follower of Lord Shiva. Despite a severe famine that forced many to leave his village, he remained behind, continuing his service of offering flowers and performing Jalabhisheka with pure cold water. His unwavering devotion earned him a place among the Shivaganas in Kailash.

The event began with a mass prayer.
Dr. H.S. Meghana, Dr. C. Abhilash, Mrs. Gouramma, Mr. M. Mahadevaswamy, and devotees from the Kumbara Samaj rendered service during the program, which saw participation from a large number of devotees and spiritual seekers.

Nothing in Life Is Permanent, Everything Is Impermanent: Sri H.B. Devanna Delivers Discourse at Suttur Srikshetra

Suttur, August 14, 2025: “Nothing in life is permanent, everything is impermanent,” said Sri H.B. Devanna while delivering a discourse on the 22nd day of the Shravan month at Suttur Srikshetra on August 14.

In his spiritually enlightening talk, Sri Devanna emphasized that everything in the world is in a constant state of change. Drawing inspiration from the teachings of the Buddha, he said that after attaining enlightenment, the Buddha realized the impermanent nature of all things — everything is created, undergoes change, and ultimately perishes.

“If we understand the concept of impermanence,” he said, “we will be able to face both the difficulties and pleasures of life with equanimity.”

Sri Devanna noted that the human body is unstable and temporary — “like a lamp placed in the air.” He pointed out that while the body is impermanent, the soul within is immortal. All living beings in creation may perish, but the soul inside them continues to exist. “There is no difference between the indi

Sense Withdrawal is Necessary for Spiritual Growth: Sri H.B. Devanna

Suttur, August 16, 2025: “Sense control is necessary for peace of mind, concentration, and spiritual progress,” said Sri H.B. Devanna while delivering a discourse on the 24th day of the Shravan month at Suttur Srikshetra on August 16.

Explaining the importance of sense withdrawal, he noted that while objects of the world—beautiful forms, melodious sounds, pleasant touches, sweet tastes, and fragrant smells—attract the human mind, one must not fall prey to these attractions. “This does not mean one should not see, hear, or enjoy the world’s beauty. We should listen to melodious songs, admire creation’s beauty, and enjoy the fruits and flowers of nature. But we should not get carried away or become deluded by them. Wise control of the senses is essential; otherwise, one easily falls into their trap. He who masters his senses becomes like Indra,” he explained.

Sri Devanna emphasized that Shiva’s love requires both inner and outer effort. Spirituality, he said, not only removes worries but also

Let Ego Fade Away and Let Shiva’s Spirit Remain: Sri H.B. Devanna

Suttur, August 13, 2025: “Let ego fade away and let Shiva’s spirit remain,” said Sri H.B. Devanna on the 21st day of the Shravan month at Suttur Srikshetra.

Addressing devotees, he emphasized the importance of humility and truthfulness. “One should abandon ego and act with humility and wisdom. Man constantly believes happiness lies in money, wealth, jobs, houses, power, political position, or fame. In reality, true happiness is not found in external possessions, but in one’s way of life and an open mind. One should not wish harm to others, nor be swayed by praise or criticism. Devotion should be practiced without ego,” he said.

Sri Devanna cautioned that when the mind is filled with the thought of ‘I am doing it’, it becomes haunted by ego. If the ego is uprooted and the mind is surrendered to divinity, God grants blessings, as expressed in the words of Basavanna.

He illustrated this with the life of Mereminda Dev, a great sage and devotee of Lord Shiva from Chengannur. Born in a

India’s Freedom Movement Was a Public Movement: Dr. V.M. Ramesh

Suttur, August 18, 2025: “The independent and progressive India was, and always is, a naturally and culturally rich nation. We have the pride of disseminating knowledge to the entire world. The role of even common people in making our country a British-free India is undeniable. When we say India’s freedom, it is truly a public movement,” observed Dr. V.M. Ramesh, Assistant Professor, History and Research Department, Karnataka State Open University (KSOU).

He was addressing the students as the chief guest at the Independence Day celebrations held at JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Ooty Road, Mysuru.

Dr. Ramesh urged students to remember the sacrifices of all freedom fighters and commemorate them. He emphasized that all sections of society—including common people, sages and saints, warriors, and women—played a vital role in India’s independence movement. “Every story is memorable. Please don’t be under the wrong conception that we got our independence only through the ahimsa moveme

The Power of Knowledge Dispels the Darkness of Ignorance: Sri H.B. Devanna

Suttur, August 12, 2025: “The power of knowledge destroys the evil of ignorance,” stated Sri H.B. Devanna while delivering a discourse on the 20th day of the Shravan month at Suttur Srikshetra.

He explained that to remove ignorance from a person, the light of knowledge is essential—light being the symbol of knowledge, and darkness the sign of ignorance. Just as the darkness of night is dispelled by light, the darkness of ignorance is removed by the illumination of knowledge. In the light of wisdom, truth prevails, and untruth is destroyed. Just as the touch of Parushamani removes the impurities of metal, the guidance and words of experienced devotees eradicate worldly attachments and illusions.

To illustrate his message, Sri Devanna narrated the story of Manakanjara, a devout Shiva worshipper from the ancient city of Kancharur, the divine abode with the Ganges on its head. Manakanjara, head of the armed forces, served Shiva’s devotees with complete devotion. Though childless for many years, by the grace of the Lord he was blessed with a beautiful daughter, whom he raised with great care and affection.

When arrangements were underway for her marriage, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a Yogi to test Manakanjara’s devotion. Welcoming the Yogi with joy, Manakanjara presented his daughter to offer her respects. The Yogi, noticing her thick, beautiful hair, remarked that it would be ideal for making a Panchavadi. Without hesitation, Manakanjara drew his dagger, cut off his daughter’s hair, and offered it to the Yogi. The Yogi vanished instantly, and by divine grace, her hair was miraculously restored.

Even at such a significant family moment, Manakanjara demonstrated the spirit of sacrifice, willing to give anything in service to Shiva’s devotees. Pleased with his unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva granted him the title of Ganapadavi in Kailash.

The day’s service was rendered by the teachers of Suttur and Sri H.L. Mahesh. The program began with a mass prayer and was attended by devotees and spiritual seekers.
