Prof. K.S. Rangappa Emphasizes the Importance of Disseminating Research Findings to Society

Mysuru, September 15, 2021: Prof. K.S. Rangappa, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore, highlighted the significance of making research outcomes accessible to every individual in society. He expressed this viewpoint during his inaugural address at the two-day International e-Conference on “Drug Discovery and Material Science.” The event, organized by the IQAC and Department of Chemistry at JSS College of Arts, Commerce, and Science, aimed to foster discussions and advancements in the field.

Prof. Rangappa emphasized the complexity and resource-intensive nature of drug discovery. He acknowledged the extensive time, financial investment, and dedicated manpower required for this process. He particularly emphasized the essential role played by chemists and biologists in the realm of Medicinal Chemistry, underscoring the significance of small molecules in drug discovery.

During his address, Prof. Rangappa highlighted Chemical Biology as an interdisciplinary platform bridging the fields of Chemistry and Biology. He further elaborated on the various stages involved in drug discovery, from molecular design to clinical trials. Emphasizing the pressing need for the discovery of therapeutic agents to combat diseases, he urged researchers worldwide to prioritize this critical area of study.

Presiding over the inaugural session, Prof. B.V. Sambashivaiah, Chief Executive of the College, underscored the importance of timely access to drugs. He acknowledged the arduous efforts of numerous scientists, spanning decades of dedicated work, required for a molecule to enter the market as a viable drug. Prof. Sambashivaiah also paid tribute to the renowned Indian scientist Prof. C.N.R. Rao for his significant contributions to the field of Material Science.

The two-day International e-Conference will feature four technical sessions led by esteemed scientists from the USA, UAE, South Africa, and India. The program includes five invited lectures, 40 oral presentations, and 45 e-poster presentations. Over 400 participants, including students, research scholars, faculty members, and scientists from various parts of the world, are actively engaging in the e-Conference.

The inaugural session commenced with a warm welcome by Dr. H.C. Honappa, Principal of the College. Dr. L. Mallesha, Head of the PG Department of Chemistry, provided insights into the conference’s objectives, while Smt. J.S. Vidya, Head of the UG Department of Chemistry, delivered a vote of thanks. The session began with an invocation by Ms. Sushmita M.S., and Mr. Neeraj Nanaiah moderated the event, ensuring its smooth proceedings.

As the International e-Conference continues, it aims to foster knowledge exchange, collaboration, and advancements in drug discovery and material science, furthering scientific progress for the benefit of society.

E-Conference on ‘Drug Discovery and Material Science’

Mysuru, September 14, 2021: The Department of Chemistry, JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science, B.N. Road, Mysuru, has organized a two-day International e-Conference on the topic, “Drug Discovery and Material Science,” on September 15 and 16.

Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore and eminent Drug Discovery Scientist Prof. K.S. Rangappa will inaugurate the e-Conference on September 15, at 10.15 am. Prof. B.V. Sambashivaiah, Chief Executive, will preside, and Principal Dr. H.C. Honnappa will be the guest of honour.

Dr. JIbran Iqbal, Zayed University, Abu Dhabi, UAE, Dr. Rajashekar Karpoormath, KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa, Dr. Rameshu Rallabandi, UT Southwestern Medical Center of Dallas, USA, and Dr. Ashish Paragaonkar of the Agilent Technologies Ltd., Bengaluru will deliver lectures on their respective subjects.

Apart from this. there will be lectures also by eminent academicians and researchers, and presentations on recent research achievements by scientists, faculty, research scholars, and students from across India and abroad.

Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji Stresses the Importance of Building a Society Free from Alcohol

Mysuru, September 14, 2021: Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji, in his address at the inauguration of the JSS Counseling Center in Mysuru, emphasized the detrimental impact of alcohol addiction on society. He described alcoholism as a social disease that affects both urban and rural areas, leading to mental health issues for those struggling with addiction. The primary objective of the JSS Counseling Center is to provide guidance and support to individuals seeking to overcome their alcohol addiction, with the ultimate aim of creating an alcohol-free society and building a strong nation.

His Holiness Paramapujya Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji commended the efforts of the Jagadguru Sri Veerasimhasana Mahasamsthana Math and the JSS Mahavidyapeetha in conducting alcohol de-addiction camps since 2014. These camps aim to educate and assist individuals in overcoming their alcohol habits. His Holiness expressed his satisfaction in witnessing the participation of people from both rural and urban areas, noting that many individuals have successfully quit alcohol addiction through these initiatives. He encouraged those who have benefitted from the programs to further educate others, as it would have a more significant impact. The inauguration of the counseling center in Mysuru reflects the growing demand for such services in society, and His Holiness urged people to utilize the center’s resources effectively. He unveiled the center’s nameplate and handbills on this occasion.

Vatal Swamiji, while speaking at the event, acknowledged the significant efforts made by the Jagadguru Sri Veerasimhasana Mahasamsthana Math and JSS Mahavidyapeetha in assisting individuals with alcohol addiction. He highlighted the increasing number of alcoholics in rural areas, leading to hardships for their families. He emphasized the importance of educating youth in rural areas and commended the continuous efforts of Parampujya Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji in this regard. He believed that the establishment of the counseling center in the city would benefit many individuals seeking help.

Dr. C.G. Betsurmath, Executive Secretary of JSS MVP, addressed the audience, stating that alcohol addiction poses numerous challenges to society. He emphasized that alcohol consumption leads to violence, cruelty, indiscipline, and negative behavior. The effects of alcohol vary across different age groups, making it essential to establish counseling centers to create an alcohol-free society.

Sri Krishnakumar of the Parampare Organization expressed his belief that the counseling center’s location in the city center would benefit many individuals. He explained that the center’s objective is to educate people about the adverse effects of alcohol, provide treatment for addicts, and offer counseling services to aid in their recovery.

Various individuals, including Ganesh, Shantaraju, Veeraraju, and others, shared their views and opinions on the importance of addressing alcohol addiction in society.

The program included a welcome address by Dr. M.P. Somashekar, an invocation by Smt. M. Geetha, and Sri S. Basavaraju served as the program’s anchor. The event was attended by Sri Jayrajendra Swamiji, Junior seer of the Sri Suttur Math, pontiffs from the Huliyurdurga and Madalli Math, the Chunchanahalli Pontiff, and administrative officers of the JSS Mahavidyapeetha.

Dr. Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji Jayanthi and Teachers Day Celebrations at JSS Educational Institution in Suttur

Suttur, Sept. 11, 2021: The JSS Educational Institution in Suttur organized a program to commemorate the 106th Jayanthi Mahotsav celebrations of HH Paramapujya Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswami, as well as Teachers Day.

Prof. H.B. Devanna, Principal of JSS Degree College in Mysuru, graced the occasion as the chief guest. In his speech, he highlighted the significance of Dr. Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswami’s life and achievements in safeguarding ancient Indian culture. He emphasized that Dr. Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswami’s birth in Karnataka was a blessing for the people, and his Jayanthi Mahotsav serves as an inspiration for all. Prof. Devanna praised Dr. Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswami’s noble actions, including the establishment of free student hostels that have benefited countless students. He described Dr. Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswami as a visionary and a noble saint who led a simple life with profound concern for the welfare of underprivileged students.

Sri S. Timmaraju, Headmaster (Retd.) of JSS High School in Suttur, also attended the event as a chief guest. He expressed his admiration for Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, considering him one of the best philosophers and visionaries who introduced Indian culture and traditions to the world. Sri Timmaraju highlighted the importance of teachers in providing clarity to students’ thoughts and inspiring them. He encouraged teachers to foster curiosity and creativity among students, urging them to make the most of their time. Sri Timmaraju emphasized that India is a land of many exceptional teachers.

Sri S.P. Udayashankar, Administrative Officer of JSS Institutions in Suttur, presided over the program. Smt. D.S. Veena, Assistant Professor at JSS B.Ed. College, administered the pledge to the students.

Dr. Sunanda Gurappa Bhoopali, Principal of JSS Sanskrit College, who recently received an award from the Honorable Governor of Karnataka, was felicitated during the event.

Report of Workshop on Leadership Skills

A workshop on “Leadership Skills” was conducted by JSS School of Nursing in Mysuru on August 30, 2021, at Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Bhavana. The workshop aimed to enhance the leadership skills, improve communication and interpersonal skills, and facilitate overall personality development of the 3rd-year General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) students. Effective leadership strategies were also emphasized during the workshop.

The workshop commenced with an invocation song, followed by the inauguration ceremony by the dignitaries present on the dais. The resource person for the workshop was Dr. Jagananath K. Dange, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Studies and Research in Education at Kuvempu University, Shimoga. Mrs. D.N. Renukadevi, the Principal, delivered the inaugural keynote address, highlighting the importance of the workshop in fostering an impressive personality and developing leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. She emphasized that these skills are crucial for students to be productive in the workplace, establish positive relationships with colleagues, and effectively collaborate on team projects.

The workshop comprised three sessions: “Personality Development,” “Leadership and Soft Skills,” and “Communication Skills.” Each session aimed to equip the students with practical knowledge and techniques to enhance their overall leadership capabilities and professional effectiveness.

The valedictory program marked the conclusion of the workshop. Mrs. Simi Thomas, a Nursing Tutor, presented the workshop report, summarizing the key highlights and takeaways. Additionally, Mr. Nagendra and Miss. Bharathi, both 3rd-year students, shared their personal experiences and insights gained from the workshop. The program was skillfully hosted by Mrs. Manasa M, a Nursing Tutor, who served as the emcee for the event.

The workshop on leadership skills provided an enriching platform for the GNM students to enhance their leadership abilities, improve communication and interpersonal skills, and develop a well-rounded personality. The knowledge and skills gained during the workshop are expected to contribute to their professional growth and enable them to succeed in their future careers.

Lamp Lighting and Oath Taking Ceremony – 2021

Mysuru, August 26, 2021: The 33rd batch of GNM Nursing Students of JSS School of Nursing, Mysuru, participated in the Lamp Lighting and Oath Taking Ceremony held on August 26, 2021, at Sri Rajendra Bhavana.

The program commenced with an invocation song, followed by welcoming the dignitaries to the dais. The lamp was then lit by the dignitaries, symbolizing wisdom, knowledge, and compassion. The faculty members joined in lighting the lamps of the 95 nursing students, signifying their journey into the nursing profession. The students then recited the oath, pledging to uphold their responsibilities as professional nurses. Mrs. D.N. Renukadevi, the Principal, administered the oath-taking ceremony.

Adding to the solemnity of the event, a melodious and soothing song titled “Shine a Light” was performed. The Chief Guest for the ceremony, Sri R. Mahesh, Director of JSS Medical Education, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru, addressed the gathering. He congratulated the nursing students on taking their oath and emphasized the importance of responsibility during their student life. Sri Mahesh expressed his appreciation for the dedicated efforts of frontline staff nurses during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, acknowledging the recognition they received from various sectors. He also highlighted the objective of JSS Institution in providing quality training and urged the students to utilize the available resources for their better future. Sri Mahesh motivated the students to uphold the sanctity of the nursing profession and make effective use of the opportunities provided by the institution.
