Awareness program under ‘Jalashakthi Abhiyan,’ on water conservation

Suttur, June 23, 2021: The ICAR JSS Krishi Vignan Kendra in Suttur organized a program on water conservation for farmers as part of the Jalashakti Abhiyan. The event took place in Sonahalli Village, Nanjangud Taluk, under the India@75 Program.

Mr. J.G. Raju, Program Assistant (Soil Science) at JSS KVK, provided valuable information to the farmers regarding the benefits of implementing water conservation techniques and the advantages of using bunds to control soil erosion and retain moisture. He also highlighted the various benefits of using different types of grasses and other crops to prevent soil erosion and improve water retention in rainfed areas.

Mr. Shamraj, a renowned agricultural scientist specializing in agronomy, shared technical insights on soil and water conservation measures. He emphasized the importance of maintaining moisture in the soil and preventing water runoff by constructing contour bunds in areas prone to erosion. He also explained how contour bunds can be utilized to channel rainwater into catchment pits. By cultivating crops on these bunds and allowing grasses and other vegetation to grow, the farmers can effectively control soil erosion and water loss.

The program witnessed the participation of 30 farmers. The esteemed dignitaries present at the event included Ms. Divya H.V., Senior Scientist and Head of JSS KVK; Ms. Netravathi Yettinamani, Home Scientist; Dr. Y.M. Rakshit Raj, Veterinary Scientist; and Dr. G.M. Vinay, Horticulture Scientist.

The training program aimed to create awareness among farmers about sustainable practices for water conservation and soil management. Through the adoption of these techniques, farmers can enhance agricultural productivity and minimize the impact of water scarcity on their crops.

The ICAR JSS Krishi Vignan Kendra continues to empower farmers with knowledge and innovative practices to promote sustainable agriculture and ensure the well-being of farming communities.
