Suttur, April 7, 2026: A five-day Summer Camp for Children titled ‘Krishi Paatha – Desi Aata’ (Agriculture Lessons, desi games), began on April 7 at ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Suttur, with the symbolic flying of kites. The camp will be held from April 7 to 11.
In her introductory remarks, Mrs. H.V. Divya, Camp Coordinator, said that schoolchildren are generally not given enough exposure to agriculture education. Keeping this in view, the centre has organised the camp to introduce children to various aspects of agriculture over five days. Along with agricultural learning, the camp also aims to familiarise children with traditional desi games so that the next generation does not forget them. She said that, considering the importance of such initiatives, similar camps have also been launched this year at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru (GKVK) and its Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Ramanagara district.
She informed that the camp would include lessons and activities related to horticulture, cow-based agriculture, kitchen gardening, beekeeping, seed-ball making, bullock-cart riding, tractor riding, and manure preparation. Traditional games such as Lagori, Buguri, Aalugulimane, and Kunte Bille will also be conducted as part of the programme.
Inaugurating the camp, Shri N.M. Shivashankarappa, Director of Rural Development, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru, said that the main objective of the camp is to provide today’s urban and semi-urban children with practical knowledge about agriculture. He noted that children should gain awareness about different crops and make full use of the opportunities offered through the camp.
Speaking as the chief guest, Shri G.L. Tripurantaka, Assistant Administrator of JSS Institutions, Suttur, said that children of the present generation must learn to face natural conditions such as sun, rain, and wind with confidence. He pointed out that playing outdoors in sunlight is essential for health, including the natural absorption of Vitamin D. He encouraged children to climb trees, play in the soil, and actively participate in both the agricultural lessons and traditional games being offered at the camp.
Presiding over the programme, Dr. B.N. Gnanesh, Senior Scientist and Head, ICAR JSS KVK, Suttur, said that the camp would teach children several practical agricultural skills over the next five days. He urged them to create rooftop or home gardens in the future with the support of their parents. He also called upon the children to learn traditional games that are on the verge of disappearing and to continue playing them with their friends.
More than 47 children and over 20 parents participated in the camp. Dr. Deepak compered the programme, while Dr. U.M. Rakshitraj proposed the vote of thanks. KVK staff members and parents were also present on the occasion.
