Prominent Figures Reflect on Mahatma Gandhi’s Principles and Call for a Simpler Life

Mysuru, August 17, 2021: Prof. G.B. Shivaramu, Trustee of the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust in Indore and Arasikere, emphasized the need to break free from greed and embrace simplicity, inspired by the life and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. Speaking at the ‘Jnaanavaaridhi-37’ digital weekly lecture program on the topic “Relevance of Gandhi’s Principles,” organized by Sri Shivaratheeshwara Dharmika Datti, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Prof. Shivaramu highlighted the universal solutions found within Gandhi’s philosophy.

“Gandhi’s thoughts offer solutions to all the world’s problems. Even revered figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela were influenced by his teachings. Mahatma Gandhi possessed qualities similar to other great leaders such as Buddha, Basavanna, and Ambedkar. He embodied humanity and famously declared, ‘My life itself is a message.’ Gandhi’s principle was to detest sin, not the sinner. He had the power to bring tears to the eyes of his enemies,” Prof. Shivaramu stated.

During the event, G. Ramachandra described Mahatma Gandhi as a “volcano of truth and non-violence,” emphasizing that his legacy should inspire and guide us. Noted litterateur Devanauru Mahadeva highlighted the need to view Gandhi as a source of inspiration rather than a mere subject of discussion. Mahadeva mentioned that renowned scientist Albert Einstein once expressed doubt that future generations would believe such a remarkable individual existed. Furthermore, Mahatma Gandhi has received admiration from numerous world leaders, and approximately 265 universities in Western countries have incorporated courses dedicated to his study, underscoring the global recognition of his greatness.

The event commenced with an invocation performed by artists from the JSS Fine Arts team, setting a reverential tone for the program. Sri R.S. Kumar skillfully compered the proceedings, ensuring a smooth flow of the lecture.

The lecture program provided a platform for reflection on Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring principles and the urgent need for individuals to lead simpler lives, free from the grip of greed. Inspired by the ideals of the Father of the Nation, participants expressed their belief in the transformative power of Gandhian philosophy and its potential to address contemporary challenges.
