“Sustainable Farming Takes Center Stage in Haratale: World Soil Day Celebration and Natural Farming Training Inspire Positive Change”

Suttur, December 7, 2023: In commemoration of World Soil Day, the ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra in collaboration with the Agricultural Technicians Institute, Mysuru Chapter, and Coromandel International Limited organized a significant event at Haratale Village in Nanjangud Taluk. The initiative aimed at celebrating World Soil Day and providing valuable training on natural farming practices.

The event featured an address by Shri Sangram Singh, a respected farmer from Haratale Village and retired IGP, who emphasized the paramount importance of preserving soil health and effective water management in agricultural activities. Shri Chikkaranganayaka, a ZP member, further underscored the concept that soil is a living being and stressed the need to refrain from harming soil health through excessive chemical use.

As a resource person, Dr. Rajagopal, a retired professor from GKVK, Bengaluru, delivered insightful remarks comparing soil to the eyes of farmers. He highlighted the indispensable role of soil in sustaining life on Earth and urged collective responsibility in safeguarding soil health. Dr. Rajagopal advocated for the conservation of beneficial organisms such as earthworms, honey bees, termites, and mitra keeta, emphasizing the importance of natural farming, organic farming, and integrated farming methods.

In his address, Dr. Rajagopal shared, “Farmers should adopt natural farming practices, organic farming, and integrated farming methods, as these not only reduce expenses but also lead to better yields and the preservation of soil health.”

Shri Mryutyunjaya, representing Coromandel International Company, provided valuable insights into maintaining soil health, nutrient management, and the use of nano fertilizers. The significance of soil health tests was also emphasized during the program.

Soil Health Certificates were distributed to participating farmers by JSS KVK in recognition of their commitment to maintaining and enhancing soil health. Smt. Divya H.V., Head JSS KVK, conveyed her wishes to all farmers on World Soil Day, expressing concern over the declining emphasis on soil health in recent times. She urged farmers to prioritize organic manure usage, as it contributes to the increase of organic carbon content in the soil, thereby protecting soil health and fertility.

The program saw the presence of Shri J.G. Rajanna, who extended a warm welcome, and Dr. G.M. Vinay, who delivered a vote of thanks. Shri Manu, President of Haratale Gram Panchayat, along with Gram Panchayat members, and more than 50 farmers, and staff members of ICAR JSS KVK actively participated in the event.
