Small Things – Big Impacts: State-Level Seminar on Nanotechnology

Mysuru, July 16, 2022: The Under Graduate Departments of Physics and Electronics at JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Ooty Road, Mysuru, organized a one-day state-level seminar on ‘Nanotechnology’ on July 15, 2022. The seminar aimed to share knowledge about Nanotechnology with students and explore its diverse applications in interdisciplinary fields across science and engineering.

Dr. N Selvakumar, Principal Scientist at the Surface Engineering Division of National Aerospace Laboratories, Bengaluru, inaugurated the seminar. In his keynote address, Dr. Selvakumar highlighted the promising results that nanomaterials in the graphene family have shown in various scientific areas. He emphasized the importance of understanding the behavior of substances at the nanoscale when used for practical applications, as nanotechnology research is advancing rapidly and applicable in various aspects of life.

Prof. B.V. Sambashivaiah, Chief Executive of the college, presided over the inaugural program. He expressed his views on the enormous potential of nanomaterials in fields such as healthcare, information technology, energy, production, security, and aerospace. While the nano market is growing rapidly and nanotechnology has become a part of our daily lives, there are still unanswered questions regarding the impacts of nanomaterials on human health and the environment.

Following the inauguration, three technical sessions were conducted. In the first session, Dr. M. Selvakumar, Principal Scientist at the Surface Engineering Division of National Aerospace Laboratories, Bengaluru, shared his knowledge on “Graphene and its Derivatives for Photo-thermal Applications.” In the second session, Dr. N. Pradeep, Associate Professor at Mount Carmel College, Bengaluru, spoke about the “Fundamentals of Nanotechnology and Inspiration from Nature.” The third session featured Dr. Asha Shrinivasan, Assistant Professor at JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, who discussed “Nanoscience – A Subject with Myriad Job Opportunities.”

The program began with an invocation by Ms. Rekha and her group. Prof. M.P. Vijayendra Kumar, the Principal, extended a warm welcome to the guests. Mr. G. Karthik, the Organizing Secretary of the seminar, proposed a vote of thanks. Dr. L. Vinay Kumar, the convener of the seminar, skillfully conducted the program. A total of 365 students and teachers attended the seminar, enriching their knowledge on nanotechnology.
