Role of Inscriptions in the Formation of History is Significant: Prof. N.S. Taranath

Mysuru, January 16, 2022: The JSS College of Arts, Commerce, and Science, in collaboration with the Broadcasting Department of the University of Mysore, organized a special lecture program on the topic “Significance of Inscriptions” as part of a series of lecture programs. The event took place on January 16, 2023, at the college premises.

Renowned historian, Prof. N.S. Taranath, delivered an insightful address highlighting the crucial role of inscriptions in the formation of history. Prof. Taranath emphasized that inscriptions provide reliable and accurate information, unlike oral history, which lacks precise dating of events. He stated, “Inscriptions serve as the science of reading and offer valuable insights into ancient civilizations. They include materials such as coins, sculptures, and copper sheets, which have been discovered in various countries like Egypt, India, and China.”

Prof. Taranath further elaborated on the significance of inscriptions, noting that they provide factual and evidential information, free from exaggerations that can often be found in historical accounts. He emphasized that inscriptions require authorized consent and act as public notices, making them a vital source for understanding Indian history. Prof. Taranath cited examples such as the Koppal inscription, Halmidi, Badami, Taalgunda, and Kuarkyala inscriptions to illustrate their value in uncovering ancient social, political, economic, cultural, and religious aspects.

In his keynote address, Prof. Nanjaiah Honganuru, Director of Broadcasting at the University of Mysore, expressed his admiration for the JSS Mahavidyapeetha and highlighted the Department of Broadcasting’s contributions over the past 90 years. He commended the department’s efforts in developing dictionaries, textbook plans, endowment lecture plans, and extending programs and projects to rural colleges.

Presiding over the program, Prof. B.V. Sambashivaiah, Chief Executive of the College, expressed his appreciation for Prof. N.S. Taranath’s lecture, describing it as a valuable opportunity. Prof. Sambashivaiah acknowledged Prof. Taranath’s significant contributions to the Buddha Research Center and emphasized that inscriptions serve as a rich source of historical information, taking various forms in different countries.

The event witnessed the presence of esteemed guests, including Smt. K.P. Laltiha, Deputy Director of Broadcasting. Kum. Niranjani Bhargava of 2nd B.Sc., commenced the program with an invocation, followed by Dr. Meenakshi extending a warm welcome to the audience. Dr. M. Sowmya delivered the vote of thanks, and Dr. N. Maheshwari served as the anchor for the program.
