ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra Organizes Poshan Abhiyan Program and Plantation Drive

Suttur, September 17, 2022: The ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, in association with the Agriculture Technicians Institute, Mysuru, successfully conducted a Poshan Abhiyan (Nutrition Campaign) and sapling plantation program at its premises in Suttur, Najangud Taluk. The event was organized as per the directives of the Union Agricultural Ministry, commemorating the 72nd Birthday celebrations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The online gathering witnessed the presence of Union Agriculture Minister Sri Narendra Singh Tomar, who addressed the participants. Highlighting the nationwide significance of the Poshan Abhiyan program, Minister Tomar emphasized the distribution of over 2 lakh vegetable seed kits and the plantation of 8 lakh saplings across 713 Krishi Vigyan Kendras. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of preserving soil fertility through the use of nano urea, a modern technology that not only enhances profitability for farmers but also contributes to India’s self-reliance in agriculture.

The distinguished chief guest, Dr. Mahanteshappa M., Joint Director of Agriculture Department (Retd.), Mysuru, and President of the Agriculture Technicians Institute, Mysuru Chapter, elucidated the objective behind organizing the Poshan Abhiyan program and shed light on the significance of soil nutrients.

Sri Manoj, Field Officer of the IFCO Initiative, provided insights into the distinction between nano urea and conventional urea, emphasizing their impact on yield and soil fertility.

Dr. Nikhit, Veterinarian, Suttur, addressed the participants, drawing attention to the deficiency of serum iron among girls and advocating the consumption of nutritious food and supplements. He also encouraged the establishment of kitchen gardens and the utilization of self-grown vegetables for improved health.

Smt. Netravathi Ettinamani, Home Scientist at JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, enlightened the audience about the importance of kitchen gardens, millets, and biofortified crops.

In her presidential address, Smt. H.V. Divya, Incharge Head of JSS KVK and Senior Scientist, expressed concern over the declining number of plants and trees and urged farmers and students to shoulder the responsibility of planting and nurturing trees. She emphasized the primary objective of the Poshan Abhiyan program, which aims to address food nutrition issues, and advised farmers to make optimal use of the distributed vegetable and greens seeds.

Following the formal ceremony, the chief guests, along with other dignitaries, actively participated in the sapling plantation drive on the JSS KVK premises. Additionally, approximately 100 vegetable seed kits and vegetable plants were distributed to farmers and students in attendance.

Dr. Vinay G.M., Horticulture Scientist at JSS KVK, extended a warm welcome to all participants, and Sri J.G. Ramanna, Program Assistant (Soil Science) at JSS KVK, delivered the vote of thanks. Smt. Netravathi Ettinamani efficiently coordinated the program, while Dr. Rakshit Raj, Veterinarian at JSS KVK, provided translation services for the Union Minister’s speech from Hindi to Kannada.

The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of male and female farmers from Suttur and neighboring villages, teachers and students from Gurumahanteshwara School, Hoskote, members of the Agriculture Technicians Institute, Mysuru Chapter, staff members of JSS Dasoha Bhavana, D.L. Mahadevappa of Danayakanapura, Chinnabuddhi, JSS KVK staff members Sri Shamraj, Sri Gangappa Hipparagi, Sri Kumaraswamy, Sri Sundarraj, and students from NOIDA University, among others.
