Interaction with Farmer Scientists on World Coconut Day Held at JSS KVK

Suttur, September 5, 2024: The ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Suttur, in collaboration with the Agricultural Technicians Institute, Mysuru Unit, observed World Coconut Day with a special interaction program focused on the topic “Technicalities of Sustainable Production of Coconuts and Opportunities for Value-Addition.” The event brought together farmer scientists and experts to discuss best practices and innovations in coconut farming.

Dr. Mahanteshappa, speaking on the occasion, highlighted the importance of the coconut tree, often referred to as ‘Kalpavruksha’ for its diverse uses and benefits. He emphasized the need for farmers to adopt a scientific approach to the integrated management of coconut production. He encouraged farmers to seek regular guidance from agricultural scientists to enhance their yield and sustainability in coconut farming.

Smt. Divya H.V., who presided over the program, urged the participating farmers to gather comprehensive information about coconut farming techniques. She emphasized the importance of following expert guidance to maximize income from coconut farming. She encouraged farmers to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and apply the knowledge to improve their farming practices.

The program saw the participation of around 60 farmers from various districts. These farmers actively engaged with the experts, presenting their queries and concerns regarding coconut farming. The interactive session provided them with practical solutions to the challenges they face in coconut cultivation.

Several distinguished experts participated in the event. Dr. Siddappa from Mysuru Horticulture University, Dr. Ramegowda from Agricultural University, Mandya, Dr. Nagappa, a retired soil scientist, along with Rajanna, Dr. Vinay G.M. from JSS KVK, Dr. Prasad Y.P., and Dr. Deepak, shared their expertise with the farmers. They provided valuable insights into various aspects of coconut farming, from variety selection to nutrition and disease management.

Dr. Siddappa, Nagappa Desai, and Dr. Vinay addressed the selection of different coconut crop varieties and the importance of integrated nutrition management. Dr. Deepak elaborated on the diseases that commonly affect coconut crops and offered practical solutions for prevention and treatment. Dr. Ramegowda and Dr. Prasad discussed the integrated management of crop diseases, while Dr. Deepak also highlighted opportunities for value-addition to coconut crops, showcasing how farmers can enhance the profitability of their produce.

Dr. Vishwanath, retired Vice-Chancellor, and Vishwanath, President of the Farmers Association, were also present at the event, offering their support and encouragement to the farmers. The program concluded with the farmers expressing their gratitude for the opportunity to interact with experts and gain knowledge that would help them improve their coconut farming practices.

The event successfully provided a platform for farmers to engage with scientists, gather practical solutions, and explore new opportunities for sustainable and profitable coconut farming.
