Kollegal, December 27, 2019: Sri D. Venkatachala, Senior Advocate from Kollegal, expressed concerns over consumers becoming slaves to advertisements and urged them to prioritize quality over catchy slogans. Speaking at a special lecture on “Consumer Protection Laws” organized by the Senior Students Forum, under the Commerce Club, as part of the World Consumers Day celebration at JSS Women’s College, Kollegal, Sri D. Venkatachala emphasized the importance of consumer rights and the need for vigilant selection.
“As consumers, we have unwittingly succumbed to the influence of advertisements and colorful slogans, forgetting the significance of quality and losing our right to choose,” Sri D. Venkatachala stated. “We are all consumers in our daily lives, and we deserve quality in the products and services we receive based on the price we pay. The law provides us with certain rights as consumers, allowing us to seek compensation if we feel deceived or cheated in terms of quality. However, we must take the initiative to check and ensure the quality of the products or services we consume. Negligence and an irresponsible attitude often lead to deception and cheating. To overcome this, we must develop a habit of questioning and demanding transparency.”
In his presidential address, Prof. M. Basavaraju, Head of Kannada Department, highlighted the need for consumer caution, especially when companies offer seemingly attractive discounts. “Consumers are being deceived at every turn in today’s world. Therefore, it is essential to conduct more awareness workshops, training camps, and educational initiatives. We must be aware of the opportunities available to us. To combat cheating, fraud, and substandard goods, consumers need to familiarize themselves with consumer protection laws and develop a habit of filing complaints with consumer forums to claim compensation,” he emphasized.
