Suttur, September 2, 2026: “Knowledge is what makes the mind blossom,” said Prof. H. B. Devanna, while delivering a discourse on the 22nd day of the Shravan Month discourse series at Suttur Srikshetra on September 2.
Speaking on the importance of knowledge in human life, Prof. Devanna said that knowledge is a priceless treasure and there is nothing equal to it. Knowledge is a form of power, and the more it is used, the more brightly it shines.
He observed that mere external appearance has little value unless it is accompanied by good qualities. “Beauty without virtue is meaningless. Inner wealth and noble qualities, which are not dependent on physical appearance, bring lasting dignity and joy to a person’s personality,” he said.
Prof. Devanna stated that knowledge dispels ignorance and shows the right path in life. It enables a person to understand situations and circumstances correctly and take appropriate decisions. Referring to the teachings of the Sharanas on the importance of knowledge, he said that a tree that gives no shade, wealth without kindness, a cow that gives no milk, beauty without virtue, and a life without knowledge are of no use.
He further said that education does not merely impart learning but also teaches humility, respect for others, generosity and morality. Knowledge is essential to face the difficulties that arise in life and to move forward successfully.
Both worldly knowledge and spiritual knowledge are important, he said, adding that knowledge can be enhanced through the guidance of teachers and elders, good deeds and satsang.
During the discourse, Prof. Devanna also narrated the noble life of Sakalesha Madarasa, who was an influential minister in Kalyana. Despite holding a position of prominence, Sakalesha Madarasa did not crave material pleasures. He renounced worldly wealth, gave importance to spiritual attainment and lived with the conviction that Lord Shiva was everything.
Smt. D. Mangalamma, Smt. P. Renukamba, Smt. Girijamba and family, along with the staff of the Engineering Department, rendered service during the programme.
The programme commenced with a mass prayer. A large number of devotees and spiritual seekers participated in the discourse.
