Suttur, August 31, 2026: “We should become like jaggery and sugar to the poor, weak and helpless by extending compassion and support to them,” said H. B. Devanna, while delivering a discourse on the 20th day of the Shravana Month discourse series at Suttur Srikshetra on August 31.
Speaking on the importance of compassion and service, Devanna said that everyone should make an effort to help the helpless, poor and vulnerable and resolve their difficulties to the extent possible. Giving them hope and confidence to face life makes one’s own life meaningful, he observed.
He stressed that charity should always be extended to those who genuinely deserve and need it. “Giving to the undeserving or to those who are already affluent serves little purpose. If we wish to experience true satisfaction in life, we must rise above distinctions of caste, colour, gender and other forms of discrimination and embrace humanity,” he said.
Devanna urged people to live harmoniously with everyone without being overwhelmed by the contradictions and challenges of life. He said the happiness and fulfilment that come from working hard, overcoming difficulties and progressing in life are beyond description. However, circumstances can change suddenly, and even a person leading a comfortable life may be reduced to hardship.
“Difficulties are a part of everyone’s life. When adversity strikes, we should not lose heart. Instead, we must develop the courage and determination to face challenges and continue moving forward,” he said.
Emphasising the importance of love and responsibility towards one’s family, Devanna said that before aspiring to become an influential or prominent person in society, one should first spread the fragrance of love, like a pure jasmine flower, among the family members who place their trust in them.
Illustrating the power of unwavering devotion, he narrated the story of Ohilayya, a devotee of Lord Someshwara of Saurashtra. The Lord, who watches over and protects His devotees, tested Ohilayya’s devotion. Pleased with his sincere and pure devotion, Lord Parameshwara blessed Ohilayya and invited him into His divine presence, Devanna said.

The programme commenced with a mass prayer. A large number of devotees and spiritual seekers participated in the discourse.
