Suttur, July 15, 2024: The ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Suttur, in collaboration with Sahaja Seeds, successfully organized a training program for farmers on July 12, 2024. The event focused on indigenous diverse paddy varieties, non-toxic paddy farming, and the challenges and opportunities in seed production.
Presiding over the program, Dr. Jnanesh, Senior Scientist and Head of JSS KVK, emphasized the importance of conserving indigenous crop varieties. He lauded the farmers for their dedication and interest in preserving various paddy varieties, Nanjangud Rasabale (banana crop), and other indigenous crops.
Shri Krishnaprasad, Director of Sahaja Seeds, highlighted the benefits of growing indigenous crops suited to the region and the potential profits for farmers. He encouraged farmers to produce indigenous crop seeds, mentioning that Sahaja Seeds organizes several beneficial events for farmers. He also noted that JSS KVK assists farmers in marketing their products through krishi melas and other fairs, allowing them to sell directly to customers and increase their profits. Additionally, he emphasized that organic farming methods can enhance soil and human health.
Progressive farmer and founder of the Siddasanna variety, Shri Shivalli Boregowda, shared his experiences with non-toxic paddy farming methods, discussing the challenges he faced and how he overcame them.
Shri Manju K.S. from Sahaja Seeds elaborated on the market opportunities for farmers who cultivate desi seeds. Smt. H.V. Divya, Seed Technology Scientist at JSS KVK, spoke about the distribution of the Siddasanna paddy variety, which is well-suited for the region, to encourage the production of indigenous sowing seeds. She also explained seed treatment using organic manure, noting that desi seeds, rice, and cereals grown through organic farming methods are in high demand.
National award-winning indigenous seed conserver Madralli Shankargur, along with Shri Rechanna from Hosamalangi and Shri Srinivasamurthy from Siddanahundi, addressed the farmers. They shared insights on conserving indigenous seeds and developing crop varieties.
The training program saw active participation from over 45 farmers, both men and women, from Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagara, Shivamogga, and other nearby areas.
Dr. Vinay, subject expert at JSS KVK, and Gangappa Hipparagi, Field Manager, were also present. Smt. H.V. Divya welcomed the guests and attendees, serving as the program’s host. Dr. Deepak, Home Science subject expert at JSS KVK, concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
