Suttur, July 3, 2024: The ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Suttur, in association with the Agriculture Technicians Institute, Mysuru, organized a one-day training program on ‘Scientific Cultivation Methods in Banana Crop’ for the benefit of farmers. The training took place at the banana crop field of progressive farmer B.N. Kumaraswamy, located in Varuna Hobli, Mysuru Taluk.
Dr. Jnanesh, Senior Scientist and Head of JSS KVK, inaugurated the program. In his address, he highlighted the economic potential of banana cultivation and encouraged farmers to seek advice from KVK scientists and officials for optimal results.
Dr. M. Mahanteshappa, President of the Agriculture Technicians Institute, Mysuru, emphasized the Institute’s collaboration with JSS KVK to organize various beneficial programs for farmers. He urged farmers to take advantage of these opportunities and leverage the support from agriculture and related department officials.
JSS KVK Horticulture Scientist provided comprehensive information on selecting the correct variety of banana crop, field preparation, suitable weather conditions, soil selection, sowing methods, companion crops, and technical strategies to increase yield.
Rajanna J.G. discussed the importance of soil testing for banana crops, integrated nutrition management, micronutrient application, and the use of ‘Baale Samruddhi’ for nutrition management in weed crops.
Dr. Anjappa, an irrigation expert from NETAFIM, explained various irrigation methods suitable for banana crops, including drip irrigation and Rasavari cultivation techniques.
Dr. Prasad Y.P., Plant Conservation Scientist at JSS KVK, covered major insect and disease prevention strategies, while Dr. Yogesh G.H., Deputy Agriculture Director at the District Agriculture Training Center, Nagenahalli, Mysuru, shared insights on managing diseases and growing banana crops organically using ‘Jeevamrutha,’ ‘Tippe Gobbara,’ vermicompost, biocompost, and bio insecticides.
Dr. Mahadevaprasad, an agriculture scientist from Mysuru, detailed market opportunities available for banana crops. Dr. Deepak Sadananda, a scientist at JSS KVK, discussed producing various banana-based products and post-harvest technology to maximize profitability during periods of low market prices.
The event also saw participation from Dr. Rajagopal, Retired Government Official and Member of the Agriculture Technicians Center, Mysuru, Dr. Krishnamurthy, Dr. Vishakanta, and other office-bearers of the Center. Over 70 farmers from surrounding districts attended the training program.
