ICAR JSS Krishi Vignan Kendra Conducts Training Program on Balanced Diet and Preparation of Supplementary Food and Nutrition for Children

Suttur, August 19, 2022: ICAR JSS Krishi Vignan Kendra in Suttur organized a comprehensive training program on ‘Balanced Diet and Preparation of Supplementary Food and Nutrition for Children’ targeted towards Anganwadi activists. The program aimed to enhance the nutritional well-being of children and women within the community through educational sessions and practical demonstrations.

The training program was inaugurated by Smt. Divya H.V., In-charge Head and Senior Scientist of JSS KVK. In her opening address, she urged the Anganwadi activists to apply the knowledge gained from the program to their daily work, emphasizing the importance of elevating the nutritional levels within the community. Smt. Divya H.V. also highlighted the diverse activities conducted by the KVK and provided insights into its demonstration units.

During the program, Smt. Netravathi Yettinamani, Home Scientist at JSS KVK, expounded on the significance of a balanced diet, encompassing five essential food groups: cereals and millets, legumes and pulses, milk and dairy products, fruits and vegetables, and oil, butter, ghee, and jaggery. She stressed the importance of incorporating all these food groups into daily meals to ensure optimum nutrition. Smt. Yettinamani also provided in-depth information on the potential health risks associated with nutrient deficiencies, recommended nutrient intake for different age groups, and the preparation of supplementary food for children aged between 6 months and 5 years. She further emphasized the need to boost immunity levels.

Furthermore, participants were encouraged to establish kitchen gardens near Anganwadi centers and their homes, fostering the cultivation and consumption of fresh, nutritious fruits, and vegetables.

Sri Shamraj, a Cultivation Science Scientist at JSS KVK, addressed the participants on the prevention of parthenium, an agricultural weed that poses risks to human health.

Sri Gangappa Hipparagi, JSS KVK Farm Manager, advised the attendees to abstain from consuming junk food and emphasized the significance of preparing and consuming nutritious meals at home for individual health improvement.

As part of the program, participants were given the opportunity to visit the demonstration units situated within the premises of ICAR JSS KVK. These units showcased practical examples and models pertaining to nutrition, diet, and food preparation.

Approximately 30 Anganwadi activists actively participated in the training program, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing their knowledge and skills in promoting balanced diets and preparing supplementary food and nutrition for children within their communities.
