Celebrate a coherent multiplicity of languages: Prof. C. Naganna

Mysuru, July 6, 2022: “We have to celebrate the multiplicity of languages by translating the available literature from one language to another,” observed Prof. C. Naganna, well-known author and visiting Professor, Manasa Gangotri, University of Mysore.

He inaugurated the one-day national level workshop on ‘Linguistics and Translation,’ organized by the Department of Languages, in association with the IQAC, JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science, on July 5, 2022.

In his keynote address, he highlighted the various aspects of literary translations of prose and fiction. “Translation occupies an important place right from the ancient period when classical Greek literature was translated into Latin and subsequently to other languages. Linguistically gifted people translated many works. Our civilization stands on translation,” he observed.

Further, he opined that translation expands our capacity to transcend our preconceptions and misconceptions. “The role of translation, especially to English expands the number of readers, and the works of a writer which is translated to English will get worldwide recognition. Any language, itself thrives to mingle with other languages. The broadening of literary horizon is done through infusions and transfusions and linguistics purity is a myth. Linguistics and translation are like Siami twins wherein one cannot live without the other. The moment a child learns to speak it starts learning to translate, as the child translates its thoughts.

Prof. B V Sambashivaiah, Chief Executive of the college, in his presidential speech observed that language is like a catalyst to understanding man and society. It brings out cross-cultural communication. It helps to understand the socio-political and rich cultural heritage of the diverse Indian society.
