Diplomas Awarded to Agricultural Products Dealers for Promoting Quality and Expertise

Suttur, December 13, 2018: In a significant step towards enhancing the knowledge and skills of agricultural products dealers, a special ceremony was held in Suttur to award Diploma in Agricultural Extension Services for Input Dealers – DAESI certificates to the dealers from Mysuru-Chamarajanagara districts.

Underlining the importance of technical expertise in the agricultural sector, Dr. G.R. Pennobali Swami, Nodal Officer of SAMETI (South), Agricultural University, Bengaluru, highlighted the need for trained dealers who can provide farmers with accurate guidance. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Govt. of India, in collaboration with MANAGE Institute, Hyderabad, SAMETI, and Agricultural Universities, designed a one-year training program to address this need. The ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Suttur successfully offered the diploma program in two batches this year.

Dr. M.S. Nataraj, Director of the Extension Branch at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, emphasized the role of diploma holders in understanding farmers’ problems and providing appropriate solutions. He encouraged dealers to collaborate with the Agriculture Department and the University to ensure the dissemination of relevant information.

During the ceremony, Dr. S. Rajendra Prasad highlighted the importance of proper storage practices, urging dealers to keep seeds and pesticides separate to maintain their quality. He stressed the significance of continuous learning and advised dealers to seek guidance from scientists when faced with crop-related challenges.

Presiding over the event, Dr. M. Mahadevappa, Director of the Rural Development Department at JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru, commended the diploma holders for their dedication and encouraged them to go beyond their business roles. He urged them to establish “farmers information centers” to provide valuable agricultural and farming insights, ultimately reducing farmers’ expenses.

The esteemed gathering included Sri N. M. Shivashankarappa, Director of the Horticulture Department at JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru, along with Sri Prakash C. Patil and Sri H. J. Jagadish.

Dr. Arun Balamatti, Chief Scientist at ICAR JSS KVK, extended a warm welcome to the guests and the audience. Sri Mahantesh T. expressed gratitude in his vote of thanks, while Sri Satish S. skillfully compered the ceremony.

JSS Higher Primary School bags overall sports prize

Suttur, December 10, 2018: The JSS Higher Primary School, Suttur, has bagged the overall prize in the three-day Jagadguru Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahswamiji Memorial JSS Inter-School Sports meet, held at the Suttur Srikshetra.

Boys category: Ashok Prabhugowda Konnura – 600 m sprint (first place), 400 m and 100 m sprint (second place); Bhojappa – 200 m sprint (third place); Prajwal – 600 m sprint (second), Parashuram K.G. – High Jump (first place), Shot Put (first place); Rahul Mehato – Long Jump (Second place), Shot Put (second place), 4×100 m. relay (first place).

Ashok Prabhugowda Konnura has bagged the ‘Individual Champion’ prize.

Girls category: Lekhana – 400 m sprint (first place); Lingtoi – 200 m. sprint (second place); Jyothi – 200 m sprint (third place), Manini – 600 m. sprint (second place). Hanika – Shot put (first place); Ibalisha – Discuss throw (second place), High Jump (third place); Manini – Long Jump (third place); 4×100 m. Relay (first place).

Group sports: Kabaddi (first place), Kumari Ibalisha ‘Best Player’ award.

Paddy Field Day in Suttur Promotes Profitable Seed Production

Suttur, December 10, 2018: The ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra organized a highly informative and engaging event called ‘Kshetrotsava’ (Paddy Field Day) at the Hoskote village in Nanjangud Taluk. This event aimed to provide valuable insights to farmers and promote the adoption of RNR 15048 paddy variety seeds and bio-fertilizers for enhanced seed production.

The ICAR JSS Krishi Vignyan Kendra (ICAR JSS KVK) distributed RNR 15048 paddy variety seeds and bio-fertilizers to selected farmers who had completed training in June 2018 for seed treatment. These farmers successfully cultivated paddy using the distributed seeds, leading to the organization of the Paddy Variety RNR 15048 crop Kshetrotsava (Field Day) at the paddy field of beneficiary Sri S. Prabhuswamy.

During the event, Sri Prabhuswamy shared his experiences and demonstrated how he achieved a bountiful paddy crop with minimal disease and pest concerns. He expressed confidence in the RNR 15048 variety, which he said guarantees a minimum yield of 23-25 quintals while being resistant to rice blast disease.

Smt. H. V. Divya, Scientist at ICAR JSS KVK, provided valuable information about the RNR 15048 paddy seeds, highlighting their 120-day duration and their superior yield compared to other small paddy varieties.

The program was inaugurated by Sri M. Chandrashekar, Managing Partner of Agro Life Sciences. He emphasized the importance of seed production measures and encouraged farmers to enter into agreements before commencing seed production. Sri Chandrashekar’s company offered to purchase good quality paddy at a price of Rs. 2,400 per quintal, providing an additional Rs. 200 above the market price for cleaned and dry produce. He also expressed the possibility of facilitating agreements and purchasing higher-priced produce for a group of 10-15 farmers interested in seed production. Farmers were advised to contact ICAR JSS KVK or his company for further details.

Dr. Arun Balamatti, Chief Scientist at ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, emphasized the potential for higher profits through smart seed selection and the use of efficient equipment such as drum seeders. He encouraged farmers to consider seed production as it offers increased returns, potentially yielding Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 20,000 more profit per acre compared to traditional methods.

Progressive farmer Sri Gurulingegowda shared his positive experience of cultivating the RNR 15048 paddy variety using a drum seeder. Other farmers from Kalmalli Basavaraju, Biligere Aradhya, Jeemaralli Guruprasad, Hoskote Chikkamadushetty, and Prabhuswamy also expressed their interest in undertaking seed production in the future.

Sri Brejnew of TVS Company announced plans to provide drum seeders to assist farmers with the sowing process.

Over 45 farmers from surrounding villages actively participated in the program, gaining valuable knowledge and insights. Smt. Netravathi Yettinamani, Scientist at ICAR JSS KVK, warmly welcomed the gathering, while progressive farmer Sri Prabhuswamy delivered the vote of thanks. Smt. H. V. Promoting Women Empowerment in Agriculture: ‘Women’s Day in Agriculture’ Organized by ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra

Suttur, December 4, 2018: ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra, in collaboration with the Sri Nanjundeshwara Mahila Kalanjiya Okkuta of the DHAAN Foundation, successfully organized the ‘Women’s Day in Agriculture’ program on December 4, 2018, in Badanvaalu village. This event aimed to empower women farmers and highlight their significant contributions to agriculture and rural development.

The program was inaugurated by Smt. Mangala Somashekar, who emphasized the importance of women’s physical and mental well-being and the need for women to take charge of their financial, political, and family decisions for the development of the country.

Smt. Meena Mysura, News Editor at Bengaluru Doordarshan Kendra, served as the resource person for the event. In her speech, she encouraged women to prioritize their overall health, consume nutritious food, and develop a positive attitude towards life. She also emphasized the importance of sustainable agriculture and shared inspiring stories of progressive women farmers who have ventured into activities such as animal husbandry, rabbit rearing, poultry farming, and sheep farming to achieve independence.

Sri S. S. Raghavendra, Financial Advisor at State Bank of India, provided valuable information on financial management. He educated the participants on the effective use of bank accounts, ATM cards, and various government benefits such as the ‘Atal Pension Scheme’ and ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Suraksha Yojana.’ Sri Raghavendra advised women to save money through additional income-generating activities and emphasized the importance of cashless transactions.

Sri Govardhan of the ‘DHAAN Foundation’ emphasized the significance of preserving culture and traditions while encouraging women to celebrate festivals with a deep understanding of their uniqueness. He highlighted the connection between physical health and a strong mindset, emphasizing the importance of both for achieving personal growth and success.

Drawing inspiration from the life of Swami Vivekananda, farmer Sri Umashankar urged women to teach their children about Swami Vivekananda’s teachings and philosophy.

Dr. Arun Balamatti, Head of ICAR JSS KVK, stressed the importance of nutrition safety in agricultural production. He recognized the historical role of women in agriculture and the need for their proper recognition and respect. Dr. Balamatti expressed the objective of the ‘Women’s Day in Agriculture’ program to raise awareness about the vital role of women in agriculture and the necessity of their active involvement for the development of the sector.

Smt. Divya H.V., Seed Technology Scientist at JSS KVK, and Smt. Netravathi Yettinamani, Scientist, shared insights into the significance of ‘Vasudha Food Products’ and medicinal plants.

The program witnessed enthusiastic participation from approximately 75 women from Badanavalu village. Sri Prabhushankar of the DHAAN Foundation and Sri Srinivas, PDO, Gram Panchayat, were also present.

World AIDS Day – Awareness rally held in Suttur

The NCC Land, Air Force and the Scouts and Guides teams of the JSS High School, Suttur, in association with the JSS Hospital had organized an awareness rally on the occasion of the World AIDS Day, in Suttur.
