Reservation is not caste-based – Dr. Jahnavi

Mysuru, December 1, 2021: Dr. Jahnavi, a Professor in the Department of Law at Karnataka State Open University, Mysuru, emphasized that the objective of reservation is to uplift socially and economically disadvantaged individuals.

She expressed these views as the chief guest during a program on ‘Constitution Day’ held at JSS College of Arts, Commerce, and Science on B.N. Road, Mysuru. Dr. Jahnavi highlighted the significance of the Indian Constitution, stating that it is one of the finest constitutions in the world and emphasizes social justice. Regarding reservation, she clarified that it should not be perceived solely as a caste-based provision for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), but rather as a means to address the social and financial backwardness of a large number of people falling under these categories.

Prof. B.A. Sambashivaiah, Chief Executive of the College, presided over the program. In his address, he outlined how the Indian Constitution incorporated elements from various constitutions, including those of Britain, Ireland, Japan, America, South Africa, Germany, Australia, and Canada. He highlighted the meticulous efforts and dedication that went into drafting the constitution over a span of two years, 11 months, and 18 days. Prof. Sambashivaiah emphasized the importance of paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, as well as Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the President of the Constitution Drafting Committee, and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution.
