Mysuru, March 9, 2020: The Postgraduate Department of Botany, JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Ooty Road, Mysuru, had organized a UGC sponsored one-day State-level seminar on the topic “Emerging Trends in Plant Science.”
Dr. Venkatesh Prasad, AVP and Head, Synthetic Biology Function, Reliance Industries Ltd., Ghansoli, Navi Mumbai, inaugurated and delivered the keynote address. Chief guest Sri N.M. Shivashankarappa, Director, Horticulture Division, JSS Mahavidyapeetha inaugurated the JSS-BOTANICA Forum, which is a botanical club for students studying Botany in JSS College. On the occasion, he spoke about the uses of common plants like Tulasi as a mouth freshener and home-made green tea and transforming traditional knowledge into scientific form.
The programme was presided by the college Chief Executive Prof. B. V. Sambashivaiah, who emphasized on the importance of plant science. “It is no more basic science, with the advancement of technologies like Biotechnology, Metabolomics, Transcriptomics, and Genetics, it has transformed into a multidisciplinary subject. It has solutions for a deadly disease like Corona which is drawing the attention of the entire world-wide in recent days. Areas of plant science like cell membrane studies and gene splicing will lead to major discoveries in the near future,” he said.
Prof. M. Mahadevappa, Principal, JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science, B.N. Road, Mysuru, honored the chief guest Sri N.M. Shivashankarappa. Organising Secretary Dr. Beligiriranga V. gave a vote of thanks.
Dr. Rashmi S., Convener, Mrs. Sindhu G.M. Co-convener, and Ms. Meghashree A.M., Organising Member honoured the speakers Dr. Venkatesh Prasad, Prof. M.B. Shivanna and Prof. Rajkumar H. Garampalli respectively.
More than 200 people including students and staff members.
Ms. K. Spandana (II MSc)compeered the program. Ms. H.S. Poornima (I MSc) rendered an invocation. Ms. S.M. Divyashree welcomed the guests. Ms. C. Tejaswini (II MSc), and Ms. Niveditha N. Bhat (I MSc) introduced the speakers and Ms. Sujatha Pal (II MSc) summarized the seminar in the concluding session.
