Prof. Umesh Acknowledges Savitribai Phule’s Unique Contribution to Education

Kollegal, January 03, 2019: Prof. Umesh, Principal of JSS Women’s College, Mysuru, highlighted the significant contribution of Savitribai Phule to the field of education, considering her as the beacon of knowledge for Indian women. He expressed these views during the inauguration of a one-day workshop on ‘Constitution-Objectives and Values’ organized by the Political Science Department at JSS Women’s College, Kollegal, on the occasion of Savitribai Phule’s Birth Anniversary.

Prof. Umesh emphasized that Savitribai Phule, being the first woman teacher in the country, played an immense role in the education sector. He emphasized the need to observe her birth anniversary meaningfully on January 3rd each year. Savitribai Phule firmly believed in the transformative power of education for the marginalized and underprivileged sections of society. Despite the prevailing social norms that discouraged the education of girls and women, she courageously opened the first school for girls and dedicated herself to fighting for their rights. Savitribai Phule’s advocacy for women’s liberation and her pioneering efforts in women’s social education make her a historical personality who should serve as a role model for all.

The workshop featured two sessions. In the first session, Dr. Anand Gowda, Professor at the Political Science Department of KSOU, Mysuru, spoke about the values of the constitution. He highlighted the Indian constitution as a model for the world, emphasizing the need for understanding its objectives and values, which have provided advantages to all members of society, including the marginalized, Dalits, and women.

In the second session, Sri Mahadevaprasad, a teacher and social reformer, delivered a talk on the topic ‘Constitution and Democracy.’ He underscored the immense contribution of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar in upholding human values and promoting social harmony. He urged the audience to understand the current social conditions and embrace values of equality in their daily lives.

Distinguished resource persons including Dr. Anand Gowda, Sri Mahadevaprasad, and Prof. Guruprasad, Head of the Political Science Department, along with Prof. Suma, were present on the dais.
