JSS Sangeetha Sabha Trust

Mysore has been popularly referred to as the Cultural Heritage of Karnataka, as it has been a home for many popular musicians, artists, dancers, and authors. The Wodeyar royal family encouraged art and architecture and patronized many talents. The members of the royal family themselves were artists and musicians. Carnatic and light music had great importance in the state. There were many great musicians from Mysuru like Sri Mysuru Sadashivaraya, Veena Sheshanna, Beedaram Krishnappa, Mysuru Vasudevacharya, Sri Muthaiah Bhaagavatharu, and many more who were internationally acclaimed.

With the change of time, the influence of the royal family on Carnatic music and other art forms became less. But that did not decrease the popularity of Carnatic music. Many musicians got together to form musical sabhas and trusts to encourage the spread of classical music. For the same purpose, JSS Sangeetha Sabha Trust was established in 2001.

The Sangeetha Sabha trust is working under the able guidance of His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji. Sri Ghanalinga Shivayogi, who was a pontiff of Suttur Srimath was a vachanakar and musician. Since, the olden days, Suttur Srimath encouraged music, arts, and culture.

When the 23rd Pontiff, His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji established schools in rural and urban areas of Mysuru, many high schools had music teachers to impart music lessons. JSS Sangeetha Sabha organizes musical programs at various places.

So far, more than five hundred concerts have been organized under Sangeetha Sabha and many artists with national and international recognition have participated. JSS Sangeetha Sabha has been a platform for local artists and budding musicians. To encourage youngsters, the Sabha has started a separate youth wing. It organizes music workshops and competitions to inculcate interest in classical music among youths.

A Sangeetha Sammelana is organized every year in December in commemoration of His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivaratri Rajendra Mahaswamiji. Besides, a musical concert called “Beladingala Sangeetha” is organized on the full moon day of every month at Srimath.
