Background to JSS College for Women, Kollegal

Kollegal is a small town in Chamarajanagara District, Karnataka. The town is very near to the famous Malai Mahadeshwara Hills. It is about 60 kms from Mysuru. The place is known as a centre for cocoon market and silk reeling. Major crops of the taluk are sugarcane, cotton, coconut, mulberry, paddy and different types of vegetables. More than 80% of the people are farmers. The remaining population earn their livelihood from petty trading, cottage/small scale industries and service sector. The literacy rate of the town and the nearby villages is 40% for male and 22% for female. Many girl students from rural background discontinued their education due to unavailibity of a higher education institute. It was a challenging and uphill task to create a right environment and provide good education for the girl students. JSS Mahavidhyapeetha converted this challenge into an opportunity by establishing a Women’s College in the Taluk.

About the College

JSS College for Women, Kollegal was established in 1983. The College is affiliated to the University of Mysore, and has been recognized under section 2 (f) and 12 (B) by University Grant Commission. It is one of the four-degree colleges in the town. Though a Government college and two private colleges function in the town, this is the only college that offers higher education exclusively for women. The College proves to be a centre for excellence and is instrumental in providing quality higher education. The institution strives to bring a socio-economic and cultural change. Women’s college started in a small building with an initial strength of 23 students and 5 teachers. The college is now functioning from a 3.96 acre of land with its own building. The campus is surrounded by lush greenery and is located in the heart of the city.

The infrastructure is designed to suit the modern higher education requirements. At present strength of the college is more than 500, of which nearly fifty percent belong to SC and ST. The programmes offered are BA, B.Com, BBA and Post Graduation in Master of Commerce (MCOM). The campus has a well-maintained girl’s hostel. The hostel can accommodate more than 200 students. It is fully equipped with modern kitchen, dining hall, prayer hall and reading room.
