Background:

A large percentage of the population is affected by speech, language and hearing disabilities. Yet, the availability of professionals to address their needs is woefully inadequate. Speech therapists and audiologists help patients overcome these communication disorders. They initiate speech and hearing capacities in individuals who have not developed them and make efforts to reinstate the lost abilities and speech and hearing. For example, they Assist children who have not learnt to speak because of various reasons, provide a voice to those who have lost it after surgical removal of the voice box and provide speech training to individuals who have lost the ability to speak. Furthermore, they evaluate and treat speech disorders which are due to neurological or other etiology. In addition to this, they provide useful information to ENT specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing disorders.
