JUSTICE SHIVARAJ V. PATIL S/O SHRI VIRUPANNA PATIL, born on 12th January, 1940 at Maladkal, Raichur District.,

Joined Bar at Gulbarga, the Divisional Headquarters in Hyderabad, Karnataka area on 25.7.1962 and practiced there upto January 1979. During this period, had built up very good practice, both on criminal and civil sides.

Served as Part-time lecturer in SethShankarlalLahotiLawCollege, Gulbarga, from 1967 to 1975 and later served as Honorary Principal of the same College from May, 1975 to June, 1978.

Served as Legal Advisor to Shree Sharanabasaveswarar Samasthan, Hyderabad, Karnataka Education Society.

Wrote a small book on the life of the great Saint “Shree Sharanabasaveswara”, Gulbarga.

Had the opportunity of giving several lectures through All India Radio relating to the subjects of legal and social importance.

Having had the experience on original and appellate sides, shifted to Bangalore for practice in February, 1979 to exclusively practice in the High Court of Karnataka. Had fairly good practice, besides as the Standing Counsel for the Bangalore Development Authority and for the Central Silk Board. Also served as Advocate for Bangalore University and Gulbarga University.

In August/September, 1980, attended the International Lawyers’ Conference at Belgrade (Yugoslavia) and Berlin (West Germany). Again visited U.S.S.R. and European Countries in April-May 1987 and to U.K. in 1995 and 1996, and U.S.A. in 1996, and had occasion to visit various Courts in different countries.

Was a member of the Karnataka State Bar Council, and the Karnataka Law Reporting Council.

Was elevated as Judge, High Court of Karnataka at Bangalore on 29.3.1990. In April, 1994, was transferred to High Court at Madras and continued as Judge, till 27.12.1998. Was acting Chief Justice of High Court of Madras from 28.12.1998 till 19.1.1999. Assumed office as Chief Justice of High Court of Rajasthan on 22.1.1999.

Elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court of India and assumed office on 15.3.2000.

Conferred with Basavashree Award on 18th August, 2002.

Participated, on behalf of Supreme Court of India, in the Conference organized by the Constitutional Court of South Africa to mark the inauguration of its new Court building at Johannesburg from 18-21 March 2004.

On 30.12.2004 GulbargaUniversity in Karnataka conferred honorary Doctorate of Law in the presence of Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India and Governor of Karnataka.

Demitted the office of the Judge, Supreme Court of India on 12th January 2005.

Joined as Member of the National Human Rights Commission of India on 3rd February 2005.

Conferred with National Law Day Award-2005 on 26.11.2005 by Indian Council of Jurists.

Demitted the office of the Member, National Human Rights Commission on 4th February, 2008.

Was appointed as One-Man Committee in December 2010 to look into certain issues relating to Department of Telecommunication as per Terms of Reference (2G Scam) and submitted the report within the scheduled time.

Appointed as Chairman, Core Committee for Prevention of Child Marriages in January 2011 and submitted the report within the scheduled time.

He has authored the following books:

(i) Sri. Sharanabasaveswara Cherithre (a small biography of a Saint);

(ii) Humility, Humanity and Human Rights (Foreword given by Justice Krishna Iyyar);

(iii) Justice Patil on Human Rights (Foreword given by Justice P.N.Bhagawati);
(iv) Words of Wisdom Part-1;

(v) Words of Wisdom Part-2.
