The Jan Shikshan Sansthan is a non-formal educational institute and there is no need to get recognition for its courses. The courses are need-based training programmes, which are specifically tailor-made with inbuilt flexibility. Further, these courses are of the unique type having Polyvalent Educational inputs, cost-effectiveness and part-time with short duration.

This is a Govt. of India sponsored scheme, by the Department of School Education and Literacy, under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The erstwhile name of this institution was Shramik Vidyapeeth. But, as a result of the cabinet decision taken during the year 1999, the nomenclature of these institutions throughout India has been changed to Jan Shikshan Sansthan. The J.S.S. Jan Shikshan Sansthan, Mysore, started functioning from April 1, 1986. It has been conducting various types of need-based skill training programmes and also general awareness programmes for its target group i.e., illiterate youths, neo-literates, house-wives, and unemployed youth, who have been deprived of formal education facilities.

The J.S.S. Jan Shikshan Sansthan, Mysore, has earned a good name as one of the best performing Jan Shikshan Sansthans in the Country. To justify this observation, the Jan Shikshan Sansthan, Mysore, has scored highest marks in the third party evaluation conducted by the external research institute (G.B. Pant Social Science Institute), which was commissioned by the Government of India.

The course offered by this institute will enable the youth to take up self-employment and become self-reliant in the society.
