More suicides among youth, a serious concern – Dr. Preethi Pai Shanbhag
Mysuru, April 10, 2017: The Kayachikitsa and Swasthavritta departments of JSS Ayurveda Medical College, Mysuru, had jointly organized ‘MANAS 2017’, a national seminar on depression, on the occasion of World Health Day, on April 7, 2017.
In her inaugural address Dr. Preethi Pai Shanbhag, Academic Director, Manasa Educational Foundation for Mental Health, Shivamogga, explained in detail about the various mental problems. She expressed her concern about the maximum number of suicides taking place among youngsters between 16-30 years of age. “Irrespective of age and profession any person may face depression problem. There are various reasons for depression. Improving relationship between your family members and friends might help a lot in preventing depression,” she added.
Chief guest Dr. Shridhar B S, Professor, Government Ayurveda Medical College, Bengaluru, expressed his view that understanding and ability to handle different situations in daily life can help a lot in getting rid of depression.
Dr. Hrishikesh Damle, MD, CEO, Atrimed Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, said “depression is a common problem affecting many, which affects the quality of work.” He suggested periodic counselling to all the employees working in government and non government organisations, which helps in preventing depression.
In his presidential address Principal Dr. K Lakshmeesh Upadhya, said: “depression among working people will affect the ability to carry out routine tasks. It also affects work and relationship with family and friends. Better understanding of depression and proper treatment will reduce the stigma associated with this illness.”
He also informed about the treatments available for various psychological problems, in ayurveda. “Swasthavritta is a branch of ayurveda which deals with controlling of mind and preventing psychological disorders,” he added.
The seminar was inaugurated at 10.30 am. The programme commenced with an invocation by Kum. Shambhavi and team. Dr. Sudhakar Reddy, HOD & Professor, Dept. of Swasthavritta welcomed the guests. Dr. Deepa C. Patil, HOD, Kayachikitsa, proposed a vote of thanks.
