The JSS Mahavidyapeetha was running four polytechnics to provide opportunities for engineering education to the economically backward yet talented students. Among these, one polytechnic was for women and one for the differently abled. Under the Modular Employable Skill (MES) programme, various training programmes are being conducted in different polytechnics.
JSS Women’s Polytechnic, Mysore
Jagadguru Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji had strong belief that if women were given professional education, a strong nation could be built. That is what led to the setting up of the Women’s Polytechnic in Mysore in 1980. The polytechnic is in the premises of the SJCE Campus and has a state- of- the- art laboratory and library. The Polytechnic which started with just two courses has 8 professional courses today under the revised system. The college also has postgraduate diploma in Computer Applications. Satisfied with the standard of the college, the government has been sanctioning grants since 1983. Apart from the regular courses, short term training programmes are also conducted here. This polytechnic’s Extension centre at Bangalore runs diploma classes in Interior Design.
Women’s Self-employment Advisory Centre
The centre is running various short term courses in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, Karnataka Women’s Development Corporation and NABARD. From 2005-06, this centre has been providing advisory services to women to start their own business.
In 1992, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India sanctioned a Nodal Centre for Women’s Polytechnic. The Centre is set up with the objective of helping diploma holders to become self reliant, to provide them with necessary information, technology and training to start small business enterprises.The Centre has made considerable achievement in this direction.
JSS Polytechnic, Mysore
The JSS Polytechnic, Mysuru was established in the year 1986. The campus is situated at an extensively elevated stretch of over 6 Hectares in the JSS Technical Institutions’ campus to the west of the University of Mysuru, Manasagangothri. It is located at about 6Kms from the city central bus stand and railway station. A shopping complex, full fledged branch of Punjab National Bank & Syndicate Bank and Cafeteria have been provided in the campus. Adjacent to the college campus is an exclusive shopping centre, where essential student's requirements and public utility services are made available.
JSS Polytechnic, Nanjangud
This polytechnic was established in 1983-84. It offers three year diploma courses in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Water Technology & Health Sciences and Electrical & Electronics Engineering. It was admitted to Grant-in-Aid in 2001-02.
Diploma under Industry Institution Interaction Programme (CO-OP scheme)
A new model of Industry Institution Interaction Programme (CO-OP scheme of Diploma) has been implemented in this polytechnic from 1992. This is the only polytechnic in the entire state of Karnataka to offer this type of diploma. These diploma courses are being run in collaboration with public sector companies viz HMT, BEL and BHEL – Bangalore and BEML – KGF, and private sector companies viz. Kaynes Technologies Pvt. Ltd., ASKAR Microns Pvt. Ltd., VWF Industries Pvt. Ltd. – Mysore, Elkayem Auto Ancillary Pvt. Ltd. – Kadakola and ATS India Pvt. Ltd.– Nanjangud. During the three year diploma, the students are being deputed to undergo 06 months of industrial training in the above listed industries and during this period, they are paid stipend. This programme will make it easy for diploma students to find jobs. Many industries are conducting campus interviews and selecting candidates suitable to them while they are still studying.
This polytechnic has established an Entrepreneurship Development Cell with assistance from AICTE, New Delhi and is conducting Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps and Entrepreneurship Development programmes for the students to promote entrepreneurship culture. It has established counseling center to help the weak/ rural students in overcoming the hurdles related to studies and other personal issues. Polytechnic also has NSS and NCC units. Various committees have been formed for the overall development of the polytechnic.
JSS Polytechnic for the differently abled, Mysore
The Differently Abled persons need equality, opportunity and accessibility in all respects to prove their abilities and not mere sympathy. Knowing this philosophy and to fulfill one of the major objectives of the National Policy on Education, the J S S Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru, a well known name in the field of education, established J S S Polytechnic for the Differently Abled at Mysuru in 1991 with the active support of the Department of Technical Education and Government of Karnataka under its World Bank Assistance Scheme.
JSSPDA was the first Polytechnic of its kind in India started to provide formal professional education at Diploma level exclusively for the Differently Abled and only Polytechnic of its kind in India. Considering its uniqueness, the Department of Technical Education has granted Academic Autonomy to this Polytechnic from the year 1999 – 2000.
The new campus of this unique Polytechnic was inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Prime Minister ,of India Sri Atal Behari Vajpayee on 3 rd January 1999 in the Gracious Presence of His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamigalavaru, the president of JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru.. The campus has been designed to suit the needs of the Differently Abled and to provide complete accessibility for them.
Six Diploma Programmes (Architecture, Commercial Practice, Computer Science & Engineering, Jewellery Design & Technology, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Computer Applications for the Visually Impaired) approved by AICTE and Government of Karnataka are being run presently. Out of them, Diploma in Jewellery Design & Technology and Diploma in Computer Applications for the Visually Impaired are the unique programmes mbeing run in this Polytechnic only in the entire country.
The duration of all these programmes is of 6 Semesters (3 Years). The admission is made on All India Basis. SSLC passed Orthopaedically Handicapped, Hearing Impaired and Visually Impaired candidates are eligible for admission as per the prevailing rules of the Government of Karnataka. The medium of teaching is English.
Most of the Differently Abled Candidates including girls who have obtained Diploma from this Polytechnic are well placed in both Govt. Departments & Private Organizations and leading independent and respectable life in the society. After Diploma, some of them have done Graduation and Post Graduation also both in Engineering & General Courses.
Many officials of State and Central Governments, VIPs and VVIPs from different parts of India and other countries visited the Polytechnic and appreciated the efforts of the Polytechnic in empowering the Differently Abled.
Recognizing the yeoman service being rendered by this Polytechnic, the Government of India has honoured this Polytechnic with ‘National Award in 2012’ and the Government of Karnataka has honoured with ‘State Award in 2016’ as Best Institution working for the cause of the Differently Abled..
