The JSS Mahavidyapeetha was running four polytechnics to provide opportunities for engineering education to the economically backward yet talented students. Among these, one polytechnic was for women and one for the differently abled. Under the Modular Employable Skill (MES) programme, various training programmes are being conducted in different polytechnics.

JSS Women’s Polytechnic, Mysore

Jagadguru Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji had strong belief that if women were given professional education, a strong nation could be built. That is what led to the setting up of the Women’s Polytechnic in Mysore in 1980. The polytechnic is in the premises of the SJCE Campus and has a state- of- the- art laboratory and library. The Polytechnic which started with just two courses has 8 professional courses today under the revised system. The college also has postgraduate diploma in Computer Applications. Satisfied with the standard of the college,  the government has been sanctioning grants since 1983. Apart from the regular courses, short term training programmes are also conducted here. This polytechnic’s Extension centre at Bangalore runs diploma classes in Interior Design.

Women’s Self-employment Advisory Centre

The centre is running various short term courses in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, Karnataka Women’s Development Corporation and NABARD. From 2005-06, this centre has been providing advisory services to women to start their own business.

Nodal Centre

In 1992, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India sanctioned a Nodal Centre for Women’s Polytechnic. The Centre is set up with the objective of helping diploma holders to become self reliant, to provide them with necessary information, technology and training to start small business enterprises.The Centre has made considerable achievement in this direction.

JSS Polytechnic, Mysore

This polytechnic was set up in 1986 to help those who would like to have technical education and expertise with a view to set up their own business. This polytechnic is established in a 15 acre area on the SJCE campus. Diploma courses in Computer Science, Electronics and Communications, Mechanical Engineering, Commercial Practice, Information Science and Engineering, Mechtronics and Electrical Engineering diploma courses were provided here. These courses are approved by the Karnataka government and the AICTE, New Delhi.  In addition, job-oriented courses are also taught here. A well equipped, most modern workshop, best furniture and a well-stocked library are also provided here.

JSS Polytechnic, Nanjangud

This polytechnic was established in 1983-84. It offers three year diploma courses in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Water Technology & Health Sciences and Electrical & Electronics Engineering. It was admitted to Grant-in-Aid in 2001-02.

Diploma under Industry Institution Interaction Programme (CO-OP scheme)

A new model of Industry Institution Interaction Programme (CO-OP scheme of Diploma) has been implemented in this polytechnic from 1992. This is the only polytechnic in the entire state of Karnataka to offer this type of diploma. These diploma courses are being run in collaboration with public sector companies viz HMT, BEL and BHEL – Bangalore and BEML – KGF, and private sector companies viz. Kaynes Technologies Pvt. Ltd., ASKAR Microns Pvt. Ltd., VWF Industries Pvt. Ltd. – Mysore, Elkayem Auto Ancillary Pvt. Ltd. – Kadakola and ATS India Pvt. Ltd.– Nanjangud. During the three year diploma, the students are being deputed to undergo 06 months of industrial training in the above listed industries and during this period, they are paid stipend. This programme will make it easy for diploma students to find jobs. Many industries are conducting campus interviews and selecting candidates suitable to them while they are still studying.

Other Activities

This polytechnic has established an Entrepreneurship Development Cell with assistance from AICTE, New Delhi and is conducting Entrepreneurship Awareness Camps and Entrepreneurship Development programmes for the students to promote entrepreneurship culture. It has established counseling center to help the weak/ rural students in overcoming the hurdles related to studies and other personal issues. Polytechnic also has NSS and NCC units. Various committees have been formed for the overall development of the polytechnic.

JSS Polytechnic for the differently abled, Mysore

This institution was started in 1991 with the objective of empowering the differently abled persons to lead self-reliant lives on their own. The Polytechnic was sanctioned by the Government of Karnataka under the World Bank Scheme. This is the first such polytechnic in India. 6 diploma courses are being provided in this polytechnic – Computer Science, Jewellery Design and Technology Electronics and Communications, Commercial Practice and Architecture.

The polytechnic has been granted autonomy by the Karnataka Government. With guidelines from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the polytechnic building is so designed as to make it easy for differently abled students to go to different departments and the hostel. With experts’ advicel user friendly furniture and lab accessories have been installed. With financial help from AICTE, New Delhi, an Enginering Resource Centre has been established here. Its objective is to develop teaching material.
The Department of Human Resource, Government of India has undertaken programmes to improve technical and professional education for the differently abled and considers this particular polytechnic as a resource centre.
