JSS Biotechnology Skill enhancement program (BiSEP)
Mysuru, Sept. 16, 2017: The Karnataka Biotechnology and Information Technology Services (KBITS), Dept. of IT & BT, Government of Karnataka, Bengaluru, has accorded permission to the JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science College (Autonomous), B. N. Road, Mysuru, for the second phase of its Biotechnology Finishing School (BTFS) Program. The program has been renamed as “Biotechnology Skill Enhancement Program” (BiSEP).
The JSS BiSEP will commence from November 2017, with a maximum intake of 20 students (10 reserved for Karnataka students and 10 for other state students). On successful completion of this program, the students will earn a Post Graduate Diploma. This one-year program will be split into six months of academic training and six months of industry internship in reputed biotech industries. As per the norms of Karnataka Government, it is mandatory for the students to undergo industry training to be enterprise ready. Selected students are provided with a fellowship of Rs 10,000 per month for 12 months.
The JSS Autonomous College is one of the 18 institutions that are hosting BiSEP all over the state to provide skill oriented training program in different domains/ specialisations. JSS College is the only institution which provides training in Protein Expression and Scale-up domain and trains the students in protein isolation, purification, characterisation, and scale-up for R&D, quality control, quality assurance and manufacturing jobs in biotech industries.
The program also creates a start-up ecosystem within the academic set-up and ensures that students are nurtured and mentored towards entrepreneurship in their subjects of expertise. JSS College is also looking forward to establishing an incubation centre to facilitate the early needs of start-ups.
During the first phase of the program (BTFS program), students from B.Tech, M.Tech, MSc (Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, etc.), M. Pharma and various other fields were enrolled and trained at JSS BTFS. The college also registered 80% placement record. Some of the industries in which students were placed include: Biocon Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru; Kemwell Biopharma Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru; Thermo Scientific Pvt. Ltd. (previously Invitrogen Life Science), Bengaluru; Hindustan Unilever (R & D) Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru; Richcore Life Science Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru; Prosetta Bioconformatics, Mysuru; Zydus Cadila Pvt. Ltd., Ahmedabad; etc.
The primary objective of this program is to bridge the gap between academia and the industry and enhance the employment opportunities of the trainees.
