Develop reading habits for a brighter future Dr. Timmegowda


Mysuru, March 10, 2018: The ‘Jaana Jaaneyara Balaga’ of the Post Graduate Department of Kannada, JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science, B. N. Road, Mysuru, in association with the Kannada Book Authority, Bengaluru, had organized a literature debate competition ‘Nanna Mechchina Pustaka – Vidyarthigala Mandane’ (My favourite book – A presentation of the students), in the college on March 10, 2018.

In his presidential address Prof. B.V. Sambashivaiah, Chief Executive, JSS College observed, “the habit of reading is like a glowing lamp. It chases away darkness. Likewise it also removes our ignorance and gives us knowledge.”

Chief guest Dr. H. R. Timmegowda, Kannada Lecturer, Mahajana First Grade College, Mysuru, observed that reading habits among the people has declined these days. But the readership for Kannada literature is still satisfactory especially among the rural youth. “In urban areas people think that all those who have obtained doctorates are intellectuals. But the fact is better reading habits will make a person knowledgeable. Hence, the value of reading never declines. Reading teaches us how to speak. Today’s youth should develop habit of reading and shape their future,” he said.

The debates presented by the students included literary works of Dr. Siddaiah Puranik, Kuvempu, Da. Ra. Bendre, Dr. Prabhushankar, Shivaram Karanth, K. S. Narasimhaswamy, Devanuru Mahadeva, P. Lankesh, K.P. Tejaswi, Sa. Ra. Aboobkar, Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Besagarahalli Ramanna and others.

Prizes were distributed for the top three winners of the competition. Principal and lecturers of the College were present. Dr. H.T. Shyalaja, Coordinator, Kannada PG Department welcomed and made the introductory speech. The programme commenced with an invocation by Kum. Nandini. Kum. Pavitra gave a vote of thanks and Kum.
