JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing

While there is a large percentage of population, which is affected with speech, language and hearing disabilities, the availability of professionals to address their needs is woefully inadequate. JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing was established in Mysore in 2001-02 to meet the increasing need for quality professionals in speech and hearing. It is affiliated to the University of Mysore and is recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India, Govt. of India. The Institute offers graduation (BSc) and post graduation (MSc) courses in Speech and Hearing. These courses are professional courses designed to produce speech and hearing specialists who are broadly classified into Speech Pathologists and Audiologists.

The speech and hearing professionals are trained to address issues related to habilitation and rehabilitation of individuals of all age groups (from infants to the very old) with speech and hearing problems.

The specialists of this field initiate speech and hearing capacities in individuals who have not developed them and make efforts to reinstate the lost abilities and speech and hearing (Example: Assisting children who have not learnt to speak because of various reasons, providing voice to those who have lost it after surgical removal of voice box and providing speech training to individuals who have lost the ability to speak).

Speech pathologists and audiologists also provide useful information to ENT specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of hearing disorders, and assist in the evaluation and treatment of speech disorders due to neurological and other disorders.
