Human Interference Causing Alarming Environmental Impact, Says Siddaramappa

Mysuru, February 13, 2019: Sri Siddaramappa, IFS, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Wildlife Division, Mysuru, expressed concern over the substantial environmental consequences resulting from human activities. Inaugurating a one-day State-level seminar on “Human Interferences on Environment – Concepts and Concern,” organized by the Postgraduate Department of Zoology at JSS College of Arts, Commerce, and Science in Mysuru, Siddaramappa highlighted the urgent need to address these issues.

With the world population crossing 7 billion and human occupation accounting for approximately 70 percent of the available land, the situation has reached an alarming stage. Siddaramappa revealed that a mere 30 percent of the earth’s forests remain, exacerbating the severity of the crisis.

During his keynote address, Siddaramappa stressed the detrimental impact of human interference, leading to widespread pollution and environmental degradation. Land infertility and declining groundwater levels are direct consequences of these actions. Factors such as air and water pollution, non-agricultural activities, and rampant commercialization have exacerbated the crisis. Siddaramappa called for collective efforts to prevent further loss of forests, protect animal lives, and preserve biodiversity.

Professor B.V. Sambashivaiah, Chief Executive of the College Complex, echoed Siddaramappa’s concerns and emphasized the role of air pollution in environmental destruction. He attributed the crisis to overpopulation, unregulated industrialization, rapid technological advancements, and urbanization, all of which have contributed to the decline of biodiversity. Sambashivaiah urged the government to collaborate with relevant NGOs to implement necessary measures for biodiversity conservation.

The seminar witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 150 undergraduate and postgraduate students representing various colleges in Mysuru.

Professor M. Mahadevappa, Principal of the College, warmly welcomed the distinguished guests, while Dr. Nijagal B. S., Head of the Postgraduate Department of Zoology, expressed gratitude on behalf of the organizers. The event commenced with an invocation led by Ms. Veenashree and group from the Department of Zoology, followed by Dr. K. S. Raghunandan, Assistant Professor, Department of PG Zoology, who served as the convener of the seminar.
