International Women’s Day 2020 Celebrated by JSS Jan Shikshan Sansthan, Honoring Women Achievers

Mysuru: JSS Jan Shikshan Sansthan marked the occasion of International Women’s Day 2020 with a grand celebration held at Nava Jyoti Auditorium, JSS College for Women, Saraswatipuram. The event aimed to recognize and felicitate 22 outstanding women achievers from various fields. Additionally, certificates were presented to successful trainees, and valuable information regarding career opportunities was provided.

The function was inaugurated by Smt. MS. Hemavathi, Secretary of Jnana Jyothi Institution. In her inspiring address, she highlighted the need for women to actively advocate for reservations in elections. She emphasized the absence of reservations for women in Loksabha and Vidhana Sabha elections and called for a 33 percent reservation for women in all fields, including politics. She further encouraged women to pursue financial independence through employment, thereby strengthening our society as a whole.

JSS College of Arts, Commerce, and Science Organizes Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji Memorial Inter-College Sports Tournament

Mysuru, March 06, 2020: The JSS College of Arts, Commerce, and Science, located on Ooty Road in Mysuru, proudly presents the Paramapujya Jagadguru Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji Memorial Inter-College Sports Tournament. This exciting event features men’s Volleyball, Throwball, and Ball Badminton, as well as women’s Throwball.

The tournament was inaugurated by Dr. Mansoor Ahmed, the Cricket Trainer of the University of Mysuru. In his address to the students, Dr. Ahmed emphasized the importance of balancing both academic and extracurricular activities. He commended the JSS Institutions for their commitment to fostering well-rounded development in students and encouraged other colleges to organize similar sports tournaments, as they contribute to building camaraderie and goodwill among students. Dr. Ahmed also advised the participating students to embrace both success and failure with a sportsmanlike attitude.

Prof. S. Shivakumaraswamy, Secretary of JSS Mahavidyapeetha, shared his belief in equal opportunities for both men and women in sports activities. He stressed the importance of engaging in sports for maintaining good mental and physical health, urging everyone to actively participate in some form of sports.

In his introductory speech, Prof. B.V. Sambashivaiah, Chief Executive of the College, paid tribute to Dr. Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji and his visionary contributions. Driven by his concern for the underprivileged, Dr. Mahaswamiji established educational institutions in rural areas to ensure access to quality education for rural students. The JSS Mahavidyapeetha, founded in 1954, now oversees more than 350 schools and colleges, including the JSS College of Arts, Commerce, and Science. Prof. Sambashivaiah expressed his hope that the tradition of conducting both curricular and extracurricular activities, such as this sports tournament, would continue in the future.

The event commenced with an invocation by Kum. K.N. Sannidhi, followed by the presence of Prof. M. Mahadevappa, the Principal of the College, and Sri M. Karthik, the Director of the Physical Education Department. Dr. L. Vinaykumar, the NCC Officer, extended his gratitude in a vote of thanks, while Sri N. Santhoshkumar, the NSS Officer, served as the program’s compere.

“World Hearing Day” Highlights at JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing in Mysuru

Mysuru: JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing (JSSISH) joined the global observance of “World Hearing Day” on March 3rd, as declared by the World Health Organization (WHO). The purpose of this annual event is to raise awareness about hearing loss and emphasize the importance of hearing care.

Each year, a specific theme is selected by the WHO, and global campaigns are organized to promote the cause. The theme for the 2020 campaign is “Hearing for life, Don’t let hearing loss limit you.”

To commemorate the occasion, JSSISH conducted a range of activities. A live radio phone-in program was arranged, allowing the general public to seek clarification on speech and hearing impairments. Mrs. Sanjana Singh S, Lecturer at JSSISH, and Mrs. Bilvashree C, Clinical Supervisor at JSSISH, provided expert responses to the queries.

Additionally, a flash mob was organized at the Mall of Mysuru from 5pm to 6pm, aiming to raise public awareness about the importance of hearing and promote the message of the World Health Organization.

On the same day, a cyclothon took place, with the participation of students, teachers, and the general public, cycling to spread the message of World Hearing Day. The cyclothon commenced at the JSS Mahavidyapeeta premises and was flagged off by Sri R. Mahesh, the Director of Medical Education at JSSMVP.

These initiatives by JSSISH exemplify their commitment to promoting hearing health and advocating for individuals with hearing impairments.

Report on Nutri-Expo 2020

Mysuru, March 05, 2020: The JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (JSS AHER), and the Department of Nutrition & Dietetics, FLS, had organized a one-day NUTRI-EXPO 2020, on the theme “Food Safety & Food Adulteration,” on March 3, 2020, in collaboration with the Department of Nutrition & Dietetics, JSS Medical College, Defence Food Research Laboratory, Ministry of Health, Govt. of India and CSIR-Central Food Research Technological Institute, Mysuru. The event aims to enhance the nutritional and health awareness among students, health care professionals, and the public.

The Expo was inaugurated by Sri K. Chandramouli, I.A.S. (Retd.), Former Secretary, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, and Former Chairman, Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Govt. of India, in the presence of Prof. Bejon Kumar Misra, International Consumer Policy Expert, New Delhi, India, and other dignitaries. Dr. Suresh B., Hon’ble Pro-Chancellor, JSS AHER, along with Dr. Surinder Singh, Vice-Chancellor, JSS AHER, Mysuru, and Dr. Manjunatha B., Registrar, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mysuru, presided over the programme.

Chief guest Sri K. Chandramouli, in his address, included highlights on the functioning and salient features, regulations of FSSAI, India. He also focused on the details of the FSS Act 2006, explaining 12 chapters which included an introduction about FSSAI, principles, provisions, analysis of foods, penalties, and food safety appellate tribunal.

Prof. Bejon Kumar Misra, Guest of honor, spoke on the roles and responsibilities of the younger generation in following and creating awareness about food consumption patterns and food adulteration. Both speakers highlighted the importance of consumer awareness and participation in bringing down the incidence of food adulteration. The Pro-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor emphasized on the role of nutrition & dietetics in preventing foodborne illness, preparation of RTE regional specific cuisines prepared and packed using safe technology without adding any harmful preservatives.

Students of various colleges of Mysuru City, health professionals and citizens thronged the Expo. The stalls opened by the host institution projected educational aids, promoting health and right eating practices, educating how to read food labeling, food storage and packaging technology. One stall was dedicated to educate and demonstrate the adverse effects of consuming high sugar, salt, and fatty foods and junk foods. Three stalls demonstrated simple techniques of identifying food adulteration in commonly consumed foods such as cereals, pulses, fresh and dehydrated fruits, and vegetables, milk, spices, and various flours and different types of oils. The methods to identify adulteration were according to FSSAI, which common people can follow in their houses. The main motto of the department stalls was to create awareness about the adverse effects of consuming junk food and adulterated food, to educate people to identify quality food and bring awareness about Indian food laws, and regulations. The nutritional assessment focused on understanding the importance of a healthy diet, functional foods, and nutraceuticals. Food stalls set up by students illustrated on modifying junk foods to healthy snacks.

The stall from CSIR-CFTRI displayed the potable adulteration detection kit which was designed by the institute. DRDO-DFRL stall exhibited different RTEs developed by them for defence personnel. The Department of Nutrition & Dietetics, JSS hospital stalls displayed healthy diets for pre and post-natal diets for women. The stall opened by the JSS Nursing College, highlighted the importance of personal hygiene and menstrual hygiene. The Expo concluded with a valedictory function, followed by cultural programs.
