Concerns Raised by Dr. Arun Balamatti Highlight the Critical Need for Rainfall

Suttur, June 22, 2019: Dr. Arun Balamatti, Chief of the ICAR JSS Krishi Vignan Kendra and Senior Scientist, voiced his apprehensions about the current weather conditions and the alarming shortage of rainfall during the rainy season. His remarks came during the ‘Environment Day’ program held at the JSS Residential School in Suttur.

Dr. Balamatti expressed his deep concern over the changing weather patterns and the resulting scarcity of rainfall. He emphasized that the environmental balance has been severely disrupted, making it challenging even for weather experts to accurately predict weather outcomes. Over the past decade, the environment has faced serious degradation, leading to a state where it is struggling to protect itself. Disturbingly, approximately 40% of fauna and 70% of insect species have already been destroyed.

Highlighting the consequences of these changes, Dr. Balamatti drew attention to the increasing temperatures and the devastating impact on human lives. In Europe alone, more than 90,000 people lose their lives annually due to rising temperatures. He emphasized the importance of this year’s World Environment Day theme, ‘Air Pollution,’ and stressed that nature can fulfill our needs but not our greed. Researchers predict that vertebrates such as tigers, lions, elephants, and bears may face extinction within the next seven years, leaving future generations to rely on photographs and films for their existence. Dr. Balamatti urged individuals to question and reflect upon their own actions and take a collective pledge to protect the environment.

The ‘Environment Day’ program was attended by Sri G. Shivamallu, Headmaster of JSS Residential School, Smt. C.P. Nirmala, Sri B.M. Siddappa, Sri G.M. Shadakshari, and other distinguished guests.

Seed Ball Sowing – JSS KVK Observes World Environment Day in a Unique Way

Suttur, June 5, 2019: ICAR JSS Krishi Vignan Kendra, Suttur, marked this year’s ‘World Environment Day’ in a special and meaningful manner by organizing a seed ball sowing drive in collaboration with Shivayoga Deshi Goshaale at Chowdikatte Village in Hunsur Taluk. The event saw active participation from approximately 150 school students and volunteers who enthusiastically sowed 1,000 seed balls on the tank bund.

Dr. Arun Balamatti, Head of JSS Krishi Vignan Kendra, inaugurated the program and highlighted the importance of the occasion. “Every year, on June 5, the world comes together to observe ‘World Environment Day.’ Unfortunately, the lack of access to clean drinking water claims the lives of approximately 5,000 people annually worldwide. Additionally, the alarming decline in vertebrate species, with an estimated complete disappearance by 2026, is a critical concern. To mitigate these issues, we must focus on expanding our green cover and conserving our forests, not only for the sake of wildlife but also for the survival of humanity,” he stated.

During the event, Sri Tammaiah, an organic farmer from Shivayoga Deshi Goshaale, expressed his concerns regarding the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides by farmers, resulting in adverse effects on the environment and the extinction of aquatic animals and biodiversity. He emphasized the need for farmers to adopt natural farming methods, cultivate medicinal plants, and protect cattle.

Sri Doddegowda from the Education Department shed light on the fact that a significant portion, approximately 60-65%, of agricultural land in the state depends on rainfall. He emphasized that the relentless deforestation has caused a decrease in annual rainfall, urging everyone to plant at least one sapling, join hands for environmental conservation, and help restore the balance of the ecosystem.

During the event, Smt. Divya, Seed Technology Scientist at JSS KVK, highlighted the importance of clean oxygen and encouraged individuals to plant at least four saplings annually. Smt. Parvatamma, Officer (Retd.) from the Health Department, discussed the significance and benefits of Yoga in promoting a healthier environment.

Expressing his deep concerns, Sri Sandeep Manjunath, Scientist from the Central Tobacco Board, Hunsur, addressed the issue of increasing plastic usage. He emphasized the urgent need to stop using plastic to prevent irreversible damage to the environment and ensure the well-being of mankind.

Following the stage program, around 150 school students, 100 volunteers, and ICAR JSS KVK staff actively participated in the Seed Ball sowing drive along the tank bund in the village. In another green initiative, the ICAR JSS KVK staff also took part in a tree plantation drive at Aryavaidya School in Nanjangud, distributing plants to all the staff and workers.

This event served as a remarkable demonstration of the commitment of ICAR JSS Krishi Vignan Kendra and its partners in promoting environmental sustainability and raising awareness about the importance of protecting our natural resources.
